good to see the congestion-charge-to-Muslim-mayor pipeline is a transatlantic phenomenon, and much faster over there as well: they’ll have a ULEZ by Christmas

An unusual SOS was sent out by a Swedish submarine in the Baltic when it was realised the boat’s crew had no coffee to wash down their breakfast pastries. That shocking state of affairs led to a training sortie by the British fast patrol craft HMS Dasher. #royalnavy #swedishnavy #submarine #baltic

Comments on this are dragging Trump for not spotting the obvious, but it seems much more sinister to me. A possible beginning of normalising. The man who wants to *invade Greenland* does not think territorial ambitions are a bad thing.

Only a few days left to apply! 👇

Once again I have poorly timed my holiday in Croatia to just miss ever more relevant public holiday Anti-Fascist Struggle Day (22 Jun)

Maybe we’re so quiet about this because we’re worried we might be next

Nothing to see her, just a prominent historian co-writing an op-ed with a man who is subject to an International Criminal Court warrant for participation and direction of numerous war crimes...

We were told digital media would replace books and we were told video games would replace books and we were told streaming video would replace books and people are still buying and reading books.

“Wherever a journalist is silenced, the democratic soul of a country is weakened. Freedom of the press is an inalienable common good. Those who conscientiously exercise this vocation cannot see their voices silenced by petty interests or fear of the truth.”

Conversely AI probably wouldn’t simplify “Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence...” but it’s still a sentence I think we spent about half an hour on at A-level

“Everyone knows that a rich man needs to get married.”

Time zones + war + social media isn’t good really is it. The waking up people are full of energy and alarmed at the same time as the going to sleep people are exhausted and upset.

Deus iuxta machinam

The 2 types of conversation you have at a London bus stop: 1) do you know when the bus is 2) my untreated illness is about to become a problem ;)

in this week's newsletter: something new! I took myself to Budapest to see what life is like in the city, to try and understand why Hungarians keep voting for Fidesz, and to find out more about Péter Magyar, the man who may beat Orbán next year: youngvulgarian.substack.com/p/european-d...

Pre-judging the contribution and uniqueness of research is a dangerous game. Thinking about the most impactful research I've done, no one knew it would be impactful before the Home Office fucked up in relation to a specific thing I happened to know a lot about

Absolute gibbering nonsense. You can’t only do the best research. You don’t know which research is going to be the best until it’s done. That’s literally what research is.

The Summer Solstice will soon be upon us, and here's what Stonehenge looked like in the 16th century. #SummerSolstice British Library Add MS 28330; Lucas De Heere, Corte Beschryvinghe van Engheland, Schotland, ende Irland; 1573 CE-1575 CE; England (London); f.36r

this can't be said enough. see also - to a truly insane extent - the Spectator. the way and the speed at which this has been destigmatised and you can have a 'sensible, grown-up debate' about if, say, Rishi Sunak is British (real recent example of which the Spectator is proud) has been horrifying

Some of the arguments being made this week in the Telegraph and London Standard about the authors' preferred ethnic makeup of Britain/London would have been considered dubious, antiquarian, and extremist in the 1990s.

I didn’t expect that the Butlerian Jihad would be started by Catholics but I’ll take it

Thanks for the reminder @janemunday.bsky.social. Every summer, I repost this article DROWNING DOES NOT LOOK LIKE DROWNING. To date, I know of FOUR kids who were saved after someone who'd clicked on the link learnt how to spot actual drowning. Take time to read and pass on. slate.com/technology/2...

All I'm asking is for the Magnum people and the Jaffa Cakes people to sit down around a table together and give us all the summer colab we need.

Now then people of Britain, windows open nice and wide for now, remember to close them by 11am, and your curtains as needed depending on which way they face. Do not come whining to me about being “too hot” at 4pm when you’ve sat there with your windows and blinds open all day.

I once handled a medieval manuscript that smelled unusually of horses, which contributed to my discovery that it was a traveling notebook of sorts. Digital surrogates are wonderful but you can miss a lot if you don’t experience the manuscript in person.

But what will they do with him?
