If Progressives didn't push the electoral majority, we'd still have segregation. Gay marriage would be illegal, and a host of other unpopular measures. I don't know, but I think a party has to stand for something.
Maybe the idea isn't walking away from your morals but explaining them better.

Did the conservative movement really care about smaller government, or was it about money and race? The point is, if the Democratic Party will only support causes that win elections, they have already lost.

If a party's morals are so easily abandoned (see the current Republican Party as an example), were they ever truly morals? Or were they just a suggestion, an organizing principle, to gather a coalition?
