Status quo NFP strategic planning misses all the good stuff... The stuff that makes strategy a force multiplier for NFP Boards. Strategy transforms limited resources into extraordinary impact. 💘 Strategy knows what it is trying to accomplish and how it will win. 💘

Yes, I did roll my own eyes when I wrote “strategy hack.” 👀 We know the issues with status quo strategic planning. Resource-draining efforts that create long to-do lists, mission statement copywriting by committee, cloudy future visions, to name just a few… 💥 So, I know some hacking is needed. 💥

What happens when we suck all the life out of something sacred and important? When I walk on the pathway nearby and I watch cars driving safely by, planes landing and departing, seeing emptied trash bins and organized soccer teams - I see governance at work, protecting us daily. ❤️

Looking at NFP Boards, I see inspiration – people coming together around common cause, giving their time and talents. And untapped potential. At a time when social impact orgs need the best contributions from Directors, Boards need to be willing to hold up a loving mirror to their practices.

A Stanford study of 900+ NFP Directors revealed something striking: 86% joined simply to serve the organization and contribute to its success. So…why have we let Board “best” practices become so fixated on tasks and processes rather than impact? Time to flip the script...with servant leadership?

Hey there, is it PMs facilitating global free trade? This win for Vegemite in Ontario involved an emergency intervention by Australian PM Anthony Albanese and bilateral negotiation with PM Carney. And, my husband insisted I post *that* Simpson's episode about Australia in the comments. 👀👀

Boards are *teams.* Not committees or collections of experts. 💡 When we recognize Boards as high-stakes teams making complex decisions together, everything simplifies – including conflict, which stems from a lack of clarity on teamwork basics. 💡

Everything Heather Cox Richardson writes should be reposted. And this one really grabbed me. As if there isn't enough in the news already... 🚨Resigned Pentagon Chief Spokesperson John Ullyot wrote in his oped it was "very likely" that "even bigger bombshell stories" are coming out this week. 🚨

This is exactly how I felt watching @governor.ca.gov Gavin Newsom's video telling Canadians not to let #47's hostility "ruin our beach vacation" in Cali. If you weren't aligned with #47's treatment of our country/people, you could have spoken up sooner. Seems like you only care about our $ now.

The Beaverton demands same debate invitation as The Rebel, even though we’re not as big a joke

I've never watched Colbert Show or @22-minutes.bsky.social as much as the past couple of months. The @colbertlateshow.bsky.social cold opens are a cornerstone of my mental health at the moment. "It's like...a dog?" Also, positive ID for Steve Bannon.

The problem with most machine-based random number generators is that they’re not TRULY random, so if you need genuine randomness it is sometimes necessary to link your code to an external random process like a physical noise source or the current rate of US tariffs on a given country.

When Baba joined Strix Insights in 2008 in an executive capacity, we had no idea he would eventually take on a governance role as well. As cat owners know all too well: you never truly own a cat—they own you. Baba exemplified this wisdom while serving Strix with distinction.

Very short and important PSA from Gary Marcus that the long-term OpenAI business model is definitely surveillance. There's a table you definitely do not want to miss at the end. "For the benefit of humanity" is doing a lot of heavy lifting in 2025. 💀

In my research, I heard two shocking words multiple times: “Never again!” …from talented professionals describing their one-time service on a not-for-profit Board. 😔 🎁 Today, more than ever, we can’t afford to waste the precious gift of volunteer Directors’ time and energy.
