Apparently Germany has dog chiropractors??

For a bad time, watch the new Fountain of Youth movie on Apple TV and take a drink every time they say “adventure” or “journey”. Just don’t sue me if you get alcohol poisoning.

At long last, you can search @addgene.bsky.social by DNA sequence! Folks have been asking for this for a long time. Please check it out before a new wave of Gen Alpha scientists comes along and asks for a "Search by vibes" feature.

My middle child turned 16 yesterday, and let’s just say we take Sweet Sixteens very literally in our family.

Starting to pack for vacation, and though it would be annoying to forget underwear or socks, it would be DEVASTATING to forget my books.

I’ve never actually taken the Pride flag down in my office, but after being inspired by my co-worker, I’m providing some wave-action for this month. #Pride 🌈

The cookie on the bag vs. the cookie in the bag.

I don’t buy a lot of CDs anymore. It’s 2025 after all. But I do buy CDs of albums I know I’ll listen to a lot. Just realized that my 2025 CD buys would be nonexistent without queer artists. Happy #PrideMonth, y’all. Also, checkout: jasmine.4.t Ezra Furman Lucy Dacus Car Seat Headrest

I have been saving “A Prayer For The Crown-Shy” by Becky Chambers for when I needed it, and for Pride Month. The very first line made me smile. This will be so worth the wait.

18yo son, 10 minutes after coming out of sedation for wisdom teeth: I’m kind of seeing double?! Me: yeah, that’s why the doctor said it’s a movie and ice cream day. Loopy son: I don’t want to watch the same movie twice!! 😆

Sometimes being an adult is just…terrible. But then sometimes you get to enjoy a breakfast sandwich and large black coffee in a quiet cafe on a drizzly Saturday morning while reading an amusing short story about an 88yo Swedish woman who casually murders people, and that’s the good stuff.

I’ve been invited to be our middle school’s PTO co-president next year and as a dude I think this may be the closest I’ll ever come to breaking a glass ceiling.

It blows my mind to think that I've been at @addgene.bsky.social for over 1.9 million of the 2 million plasmids shared. Very proud of this organization and what it's contributed to the scientific community (and what the community has contributed to Addgene!).

Another year, another day spent talking to 8th graders about new CRISPR applications and bioethical questions. We spent a while on rare genetic diseases and, of course, dire wolves and wooly mice. Not every kid is into it, but I love to see the wheels turning behind the eyes of the kids who are.

Shout out to all the amazing scientists who worked on these 8 studies - your work will accelerate neuroscience research globally! We're grateful to play a part in helping these tools reach labs worldwide. www.addgene.org/collections/...

Always grateful to investigators like @sternberglab.bsky.social and David Liu who share their plasmids through @addgene.bsky.social. www.addgene.org/browse/artic...

I’m at a meeting at my town’s high school. Enjoying this note on the chorus room door.

Smashed my 5-Miler record by almost three minutes!

I thought I’d covered all the bases of suit-wearing to my son before he left for prom, but somehow I forgot to mention this🙄

My son pointed out that he thought it was funny that Bose speakers announce their own battery life when you turn them on. But I want this feature for my social battery. When I start a conversation, I want to preface it with “Hey, my social battery is at 30%.” Sets everyone’s expectations. 🪫

Over the past year, I've watched a subset of people I know and respect become increasingly reliant on AI. I worry for their critical thinking skills, and about the accuracy of the work they produce. And as my friend Jane's piece here demonstrates, there are some ethical dilemmas as well.

My dad, who turned 80 a few weeks ago, got his annual physical this past week. He is on no medication whatsoever and got a completely clean bill of health from his doctor. Dang. #lifegoals

What a comfort to know that my family is so reliably negligent at picking up after themselves that I can fill the final 1/3 of the dishwasher just by walking around my home for 5 minutes and finding the dirty dishes they’ve left everywhere 😒

The new Car Seat Headrest album doesn’t officially drop for a few hours, but I’m the old person who got the hard copy, so got a sneak peek. Not sure it beats Teens of Denial, which is one of the most underrated albums of the last decade, but holy moly is it ambitious. Concept album of the year.

Easy

My 15yo daughter has been in Rome since last Saturday on a school trip. She’s not an easily impressed kid—I guess this is what it took.

Today was a big Boston Appreciation Day for me. Cheered on runners at the marathon, enjoyed the cherry blossoms in Boston Garden, and watched some amazing LGBTQ artists (jasmine.4.t and Lucy Dacus) put on a killer show and bask in the support of Boston’s queer community. Good job, Boston.

Me lamenting to a friend about my teenagers going to prom. How did I fail so miserably at making them socially inept??

At least one federal agency is bringing a little joy into my life today. Thanks, US Postal Service.

Me, the PTO secretary, to school district IT: When I send the PTO newsletter via the software you provide, it's going to parents' spam. IT: Okay. Tell recipients to whitelist the domain. Me: But I can only contact them with this software, and my messages are going to spam. IT: ... Me: ...

Received a spam email who addressed their message with "Hello Jerkins", and I'm granting tacit permission to folks to call me this whenever I act like an arsehole. I hope I don't act like that frequently, but in case I do, you now have a very specific name for me.

My frustrated 18yo son, who spent most of the evening filling out forms for college: "So, is part of being an adult mostly about filling out paperwork all the time? Me: "Umm...yes. Yes it is."

This weather has me drinking coffee like a detective in a Scandinavian crime novel.

My dad and I commiserating over the weather in New England today.

I can’t overstate how therapeutic this song from Valerie June is. I hadn’t even heard of this artist until this morning when she came up in my new album feed, and it’s all I want to listen to now. youtu.be/7GUMVuFzKVI?...
