Lander: "It's just gross, racist bigotry. Meanwhile he's running an optimistic, upbeat campaign for a NY where everybody belongs, and I feel proud as the highest-ranking Jewish elected official in NYC to be supporting somebody who would be the first Muslim mayor—what could be more NYC than that?"

Shout out to Walter Scott 🕊️ for giving us one of the best music videos of the 80’s. Their walk is so cold!

RIP Walter Scott of the Whispers. This is my fave song from them. youtu.be/fOaxEa5ONJw?...

sorry, you are telling me baby Mamdani made a music video directed by his perfect mom starting Lupita Nyong'o and we are meant to see this as a downside youtu.be/DZ1OblYm5YY?...

This amendment was passed explicitly to grant citizenship to the formerly enslaved. It’s not just our business; it’s our foundation. Dred Scott said we’d never be citizens; the 14th amendment fixed that. What happens when the court removes the fix?

"My father, an early and prominent computer scientist, passed away more than two years ago. Since then I’ve been trying to make sense of how rapidly the world that helped make him, and in turn the one he helped shape, is unraveling." 1/ scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2025/06/26/d...

There is no Going Back To Normal from this. There's no letting bygones be bygones & getting along. These people are kidnapping children. Even if by some chance our society's trajectory changes, we can't be walking among & consorting with people who eagerly conducted state sanctioned kidnappings.

I catch one every change I get. And it’s a wonder to watch them light up and then fly away.

No matter how many summers you’ve spent on this Earth, it’s always exciting to catch a lightning bug in your hand

important to understand that there are still alums who are angry over integration and co-education at the university.

Trump, who said last year that he had “saved” historically Black colleges, has canceled $140 million in grants to them since March. Agencies told HBCUs “to change the language in grant applications that explicitly focus on Black people — or lose federal funding.” www.chronicle.com/article/hbcu...

Big news! I'm heading to the National Humanities Center as the next president. I'm proud to be the first woman, the first Black person, and the first person of color to lead it. Honored to start this new chapter. #Humanities #BlackWomenLead #BlackSky

Thread If you've read There Is No Place for Us, you'll remember that at the end of the book, after an anguished stretch of homelessness, Kara and her children finally move into an apartment at Chelsea Gardens—a run-down, aging complex in College Park. A place she hoped would be their fresh start.

I once had a fight with my publisher's lawyer over what constitutes "fair use." He said reprinting 4 lines of a poem without the poet's explicit permission was too much. But AI gobbling up whole books now counts as "fair use." Something is definitely wrong with US copyright law.

Few of the comp-sci students I know are as curious and passionate about coding as history, poli-sci, or art students are about their studies and classes. It’s about stoking curiosity, falling down the rabbit hole, and later using that experience in life.

"Learn to code" was always bad advice, unless you actually like to code. College students have the best chance of professional success if they major in topics that interest them. Today in @startribune.com. Please tell high school students and parents. www.startribune.com/what-should-...

The megalomania here is really something. Recommended reading just to have a grasp of the unreality we’re fighting right now.

Writing this book about #globalantiblackness, bearing witness to how they love to make us foreign, to make our presence illegal, to disappear us in prisons, take our citizenship, belonging and safety away. And yet we live, we fight, we make joy in the most beautiful ways. Be still my heart. 😭

Not a defense, an explanation, 250k is like a rounding error for him

1. Most everyone knows that the Civil War started in 1861, the Emancipation Proclamation was ordered in 1863, and the Civil War came to an end in 1865. Hell, we just celebrated the 160th Juneteenth, right??!! But what if I said that the Civil War didn't end until 1962? Just 63 years ago? 🧵

And then this shit just came out. When you’re making over $700k a year, gaining $12k is nothing. It’s a nice vacation, redoing the garage, giving a niece/nephew a car. When you’re making $23k a year, losing $1600 is “are we paying for food or for the house or for medical bills” territory.

Delighted to facilitate this conversation about the way intersectional inequality, technology, and politics intersect with @moyazb.bsky.social and @ninajankowicz.com for @signsjournal.org. Critically important for all of us.

Ironically, in the 1920s Stephen Miller's grandparents, Jewish immigrants who settled in central Pennsylvania where they created the inter-generational wealth that helped fund Miller's lifestyle, were attacked with this exact same rhetoric from the immigration restrictionists of their day, the KKK.

Remember when in 2020 a Black man won the election for mayor in Alabama, and the previous guy just went "nope" and literally locked him out of town hall? He finally got sworn in last summer, like 4 years after winning the election. abcnews.go.com/Politics/ala...

Just a simple #Fact for #Today and, in fact, any other day. 🤣 #Memes #Microsoft #MicrosoftTeams #Windows

Mitch McConnell told Senate Republicans that Americans concerned about losing Medicaid will “get over it." No one will “get over” losing a loved one because Republicans in Congress failed them.

Hahhahaha omg

Harriet Tubman gets a roadside historical marker on the Eastern Shore

“Magic realism,” as in the literary genre associated with Latin America and the global south? As in the counternarrative of American imperialism? If socialism is “magic realism,” then America is a fantasy—a world built on whiteness with tools like Palantir. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

Cambridge police arrested an old man who uses a cane for entering his own house and when Obama said the officer acted stupidly the Washington press corps responded as though he he personally walked into their kitchens, pissed on their chicken, and left a Black power fist shaped turd on their porch
