This! Abundance of what, for whom?!

This is actually a great illustration of how small and simple techbros think the world is. That, in turn, is key to their worldview and a large part of why they’re evil. They confuse their models/maps for the territory, and try to terraform the world down to their code when it will never ever fit.

They're literally doing the meme

Big news: The Trump administration has essentially proposed shutting down tribal colleges and universities, displacing more than 20,000 students. My latest for ProPublica:

I can't emphasize this enough: Elon Musk is a symptom of the alienation that comes with sufficient accumulated wealth. His entire narrative is tailored to people used to engaging with high-level abstractions, free from any real-world evidence. None of it survives momentary contact with a shop floor.

New post on the blog! Showcasing the diversity of scientific and religious worldviews that align with process-relational understanding of how reality works, with the prime example of cool dude Thích Nhất Hạnh and his Engaged Buddhism.

When warnings of Insectageddon were issued a few years ago, there was widespread denial. Less so now. It's devastating. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

US climate scientists need all the help they can get. Including from foul-mouthed comedians! 🤡😱😱 Watch Emmy Award-Winning David Cross team up with Prof Michael Oppenheimer in the US launch of the hit series "Climate Science Translated". #climate #arresteddevelopment #climatescience

The FBI is now going after trans people and their healthcare. Today it's gender affirming care, tomorrow abortion. This is the authoritarian playbook on display.

"Scientists and citizens assessed the effectiveness of two wildlife underpasses installed under a road in Monkton, Vermont. The results were striking: an 80.2% reduction in amphibian deaths." Glad to see this new study proving the utility of herp crossings! #roadecology www.uvm.edu/uvmnews/news...

I think it's easier to understand the current media environment once you understand that a whole bunch of ambitious people are looking at our descent into authoritarian oligarchy and thinking it's a great opportunity to audition as a courtier.

Part II is up! Not to brag, but I've never seen a better practical guide to truth and reality than this 20-minute-total, super-condensed post/mini-course on red, yellow, and green flags for information and sources, and how to put them together.

This is what "anti-DEI" means to the Trump administration. It's not "some corporate DEI measures are pointless or counterproductive," it's "women and people of color are presumptively unqualified for important government jobs"

I want my enemies to have less power and for us to have more. Part of that involves people who have supported bad leaders and ideas changing their minds. We don't have to be anyone's friend or forgive people, but off-ramps must exist. I think that's pretty basic.

the republican party is not a political organization in any meaningful sense as much as it is a nihilistic death cult

And his followers, of course, agree. He’s the cartoonish avatar of their Real America.

How many other ways can they tell people directly and on camera that culling marginalized populations is not an accident or incompetency but a *central goal* of their political program before more folks actually believe them? It’s literally so important to them they get giddy talking about it.

Techbros are “not interested in being an audience to culture that is not about them…When I am in front of the painting over there…I’m not optimizing myself. When you run you can beat your time. Either I like the painting or I don’t like the painting. There isn’t a clear metric around it.” Great read

currency of the realm in republican politics is a blithe contempt for life and indifference to suffering

As I've said before, what we're dealing with fundamentally here, and have been dealing with for some time, is evil. Our political norms and political media prohibit talking about a mainstream political faction this way. But it is the truth. It needs to be known and it needs to be said.

Dek here: "As Mr. Musk entered President Trump’s orbit, his private life grew increasingly tumultuous and his drug use was more intense than previously known." We find this out AFTER he's ripped apart the government for no reason and destroyed countless lives? www.nytimes.com/2025/05/30/u...

Trump stopped mentioning the hazard mitigation grant program in major disaster declarations, so I started looking into what was happening. Here's what I found by asking each state asking about the status of their recent hazard mitigation requests. Full story here: www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

This needs broader attention. As @davekarpf.bsky.social put it, "The trick with writing about the ideological project of Silicon Valley lies in taking patently unserious ideas seriously." And we have to take them seriously when very powerful people are using them to try to change our world.

All these lovely stories about transit illustrate a lot of why right-wingers despise it. They’re reminders that we do actually live in a (multiracial, multicultural) society.

the more i learn about ai development and the data centers these tech corporations are building and the amount of money and power the people in these companies have and the jobs they want to destroy, the more i understand that we cannot let them build this future they want for us

Update: reports today that multiple legal observers were arrested today in New York at two separate immigration courts, for allegedly “obstructing” ICE. Not only that, apparently some immigration courts are barring the public from attending hearings. This mess is escalating fast.

Never mind that climate change may wipe out a large chunk of global GDP iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1... This is in line with the directive to stop considering economic damages from climate when making policy. Despite, of course, those damages being sizable: www.nytimes.com/2025/05/10/c...

The existence of universities is a reminder of the existence of complexity and difference beyond these people’s understanding and control. It’s ontological as well as emotional. Knowledge threatens not just their identity but their reality itself. Terraform the world down into their simple lil’ map.

But asking young men to behave as if they are responsible to others is indeed an attack on masculinity, at least so far as masculinity is defined as the entitlement to behave with indifference to others' dignity and wellbeing.

The real tragedy of young men today is not that they're being held back from success by a bunch of woke scolds. The real tragedy is that they're being told that success & happiness come through escaping all constraints, dominating & controlling others, & suppressing all vulnerability or weakness.

New blog post - the most practical one yet, distilling the best advice from my entire educational and professional career! This is a big passion project with years of research and writing behind it, it would mean a lot to me for people to sign up for occasional (0-2/week) posts and curated links.

A new analysis estimates the Trump/GOP budget's rollback of clean energy tax credits will eliminate nearly 830,000 jobs by 2030 and raise energy prices by 50% by 2035.  Just another way the "big beautiful bill" will make the economy worse and your life more expensive.

"What I’m really worried about is less an active plot than the terminal erosion of those habits of mind and cultural practices that sustain a mass democracy." publiccomment.blog/p/you-ll-nev...

When the Cass Review came out last year, the NYT rushed to cover it complete with post notifications. After reviews in Germany and Utah came out supporting gender affirming care for trans youth, dead silence. You can be just as biased in what you don't cover as what you do.

Ahead of this Sunday's episode on Mary Midgley, we sent our Roving Philosophical Reporter to explore Midgley’s ideas about animals and the Gaia hypothesis with @philosophellie from King's College London and Mara-Daria Cojocaru, Project Director of "Philosophy in the Wild." youtu.be/yraIY5Uhb98?...
