Until a few years ago, I thought the line “how do you solve a problem like Maria” in The Sound of Music was asked in admiration of Maria’s unique problem-solving rather than identifying *her* as a problem to be solved.

Yep. And I’d also not really twigged (not being a SW head) that it was this way originally chiefly because Lucas *couldn’t* show all the details of this world. Necessity the mother of imagination as well as invention! bsky.app/profile/volt...

(I say "Give it all awards now", but of course I want some of those awards to go to Hacks too.)

I hope all comedy writing tutors are going to be using Matt Remick as a new example of a truly great sitcom lead character whose flaw - per all great sitcom lead characters - leads him to make things worse for himself. #TheStudio

The sort that Matt Remick desperately wants to make in The Studio.

Ha yes, I think so? Or at least: they trusted me! :) As Moose says, it's very instinctive isn't it, so I'm sure with some I couldn't even explain myself why it worked/didn't work.

I had a fun (genuinely!) back and forth with a US dir/prod I wrote a script for when new producers came on board and wanted a version with all 'fuck's removed. The US dir/prod went and replaced them; I then went through it explaining why 'bollocks', for example, worked in one place and not another.

True, and it doesn't get more Duranny than The Reflex.

Ooh yes a very strong contender for that title. Plus: I adore it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again (because I *am* that boring): 1984 was the best music year of the 80s. #totp

Many so-called GC feminists just don't care. I had drinks last summer - with someone very prominent - and I told her of those trans kids who *to my knowledge* had killed themselves and she said, casually, 'well, I'm not surprised, they are all mentally ill.' This is not a movement of kindness. /7

Counterpoint: In a world increasingly filled with AI slop and disinformation, a company could decide to pride itself on its talented, skilled freelancers and employees being people who create wonderful human art without using AI.

Yep but my point is writers don’t have to be performers too. As Ed says, it’s not an open door show but they’ve done an open call (whether or not it’s via agents it’s still that?) to find writers for it, which is refreshing.

Yep. And no doubt (per SNL US) most of the performers will be good writers too. But it’s great they’re looking for writers in this way.

Also the fact that writers can submit, full stop - ie like actors/performers sending in tapes - is pretty refreshing given how British TV comedy is very performer-writer driven.

As long as you’re laughing at jokes you don’t remember writing and/or thinking to yourself “Heyyy this Andrew Hunter Murray guy is actually pretty good!” I think it’s d) a pleasant upside of c).

And #1c000lest 6 is "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys (11 pt). Everyone knows this one, so I thought I'd share the vocals-only track for anyone who hasn't heard that. Carl Wilson is only nineteen here, and it's (I think, there's some debate) only his fourth lead vocal on a Beach Boys record.
