Certainly very different in tone from election night. But in keeping with recent remarks. At NATO last week: "America is indispensable for the security of Europe - today and for a long time to come..." "I am very thankful today that I can come to a more optimistic assessment of the future of NATO."

Update: European Parliament President @president.europarl.europa.eu is flying with us ordinary folk. She did get VIP treatment - but that's a very relative term when you fly Ryanair from Charleroi - i.e. someone with a high-viz vest escorted her to the plane.

...whether the urgent need (as he and others see it) for a surge in European defence spending could qualify as an exceptional case, rather than a long-term crisis. To me, there's some wiggle room there. And it could be significant. Our story below. And for sake of balance, Euronews in next post.

The gist of his comments was: I'm not changing the German position - joint borrowing can only happen in exceptional cases. We've had them in the past, now we're presented with longer-term crises, we can't have permanent exceptions. What he didn't quite say was... (2/3)
