Certainly very different in tone from election night. But in keeping with recent remarks. At NATO last week:
"America is indispensable for the security of Europe - today and for a long time to come..."
"I am very thankful today that I can come to a more optimistic assessment of the future of NATO."

Update: European Parliament President @president.europarl.europa.eu is flying with us ordinary folk.
She did get VIP treatment - but that's a very relative term when you fly Ryanair from Charleroi - i.e. someone with a high-viz vest escorted her to the plane.

...whether the urgent need (as he and others see it) for a surge in European defence spending could qualify as an exceptional case, rather than a long-term crisis.
To me, there's some wiggle room there. And it could be significant.

The gist of his comments was:
I'm not changing the German position - joint borrowing can only happen in exceptional cases.
We've had them in the past, now we're presented with longer-term crises, we can't have permanent exceptions.
