Because I'm a nobody my ongoing discussion with my (supportive) MP gets nowhere. Thar's why I keep bringing up the issue, hoping a somebody takes up the cause. Apparently the main (only?) thing stopping Isthmus of Chignecto from eroding away in storms is railbed.

It takes longer to get to Montreal from Halifax than it used to a few years ago. Main reasons include having to always give way to freight, aging rolling stock and track. If we had Eurostar equivalent we could get there in 12 hours, now it's about 24. I'd settle for newer train, better facilities.

Bring back the train, only better.

Coincidentally just read this on FB: "To recommend thrift to the poor is both grotesque and insulting. It is like advising a man who is starving to eat less." – Oscar Wilde

Many years ago I was a census rep, going door to door leaving the form or helping people fill it out if they wanted me to. Invariably it was people living in boarding houses (which are all gone now I think) who invited me in to see new kittens, old women living alone who wanted me to stay for tea.

It was a sort of golden colour yesterday evening too, unlike usual silver. Smoke high above us?

In the early 70s, before we moved to Dartmouth, there was a female mayor, Eileen Stubbs.

Dark times Posted in Thinkings December 9, 2018 by anhaga1 Once upon a time humans spent half their time beneath a canopy of stars. We knew them by name and understood their rhythm. Then one day we received the gift of fire. ... [T]he stars fle[d] ... and a curtain of darkness fell.

There's been a change in the meaning of phobia, which was aversion, not fear. (Me just being a word nerd, not intending to imply anything whatsoever about the content of the post 🕊️)

Excuse me. We don't "normally" have a respiratory season in June. Do we???

Theoretically, if you don't have a terminal illness or a disability which makes it impossible, you could just commit suicide. But does that mess up things for your heirs?

Suppose it depends what it's going to be used for? If it's to sort through mounds of data and save time, maybe okay, provided a trained human being always makes final decisions. We already know robot *assistants* can do delicate surgery. But current generation AI is scary - it has no common sense.

Not impressed with him when he was involved in the HRMbydesign public consultations. Given that the meeting where members of public were invited to vote on their preferred future development areas of Halifax was obviously *packed* with developers' people and chose absolutely the worst profile....

"Most" - out of the usual pathetic turnout. Voting should become compulsory at all levels. And there should be much better publicity provided by impartial elections commissions, not relying on the parties to publicise the fact there's an election and where and how to vote.

😠I suppose he wants us to be like Toronto where Ford is interfering and wasting millions to remove bike lanes. Maybe anticipating Houston who has been chumming around with Ford and going to Washington to pick up tips on how to be a despot.

I don't have a garden now so can't test, but I read that scraping some bar soap under your fingernails (before gardening) can help keep them clean.

It may be tragic for individuals and families, but with 8 billion humans and counting on the planet I think Nature needs help from all quarters to quite literally decimate our numbers.

Where I live it's now being suggested that people with yards and gardens get a chicken or two - to keep down the ticks. Nova Scotia, tick capital of Canada. 😱

Can you imagine the CPC and the NDP voting together? They are diametrically opposed on nearly every issue.

But there are enough to form a more diverse and hopefully effective opposition to counteract the Con opposition. An opposition to the opposition I guess :D as well as to the governing party.

We knew we needed a government which could save us from the worst of tRump. More of us should have voted for viable NDP or Green candidates; I do understand why that didn't happen, and given that so much support stil stayed with the Cons (why???) probably just as well. Once the dust settles ...

Smh 🙄 In fact it makes a lot of sense for the rather aged and unwell King Charles III to plan a trip to Canada sooner rather than later, and if it coincides with the opening of Parliament so much the better. He can actually perform one of his duties here himself, instead of the GG.

At my public service workplace new HR head came to meet our department. Me being newish, very naive asked him pointblank if he was for us or the employer (I forget my exact words there was an audible gasp in the room) and he told me the employer. Before that I'd thought HR was for the employees.
