"Foreign students pay full price and by doing so make education more affordable for citizens" is true but... not a good thing. Education is a public good, should be funded as such. It's good for schools to welcome foreign students. Existential reliance on high$tuition foreign students is bad.

I'm old enough to remember Katie Roiphe naming the author of this in a Harper's story

Look how one little bollard can bring so much joy to the world. #WorldBollardAssociation

If you are over 25 years old and have fond memories of AP English, please understand that they are irrelevant. Things have changed a lot, AP is now firmly in league with the forces trying to eliminate books as a unit of meaning from the American education system.

Amusingly: this same staffing agency once posted a call for 'New Yorker / New York Times Magazine-type' writers. I applied, sent a dozen of clips from both of those magazines, and was told I was unqualified.

Great piece. I'm starting to teach high school English. One of my big takeaways this semester was the extent to which in-class, teacher-led close reading is the most effective antidote imagineable to the Big Bad Present. BUT: ed system doesn't always make room for it (even while pretending to).

It would be a very Percival Everett move to go ahead and write the fake Percival Everett book from the AI generated summer books roundup.

I am going to win this reality show and use the millions of dollars to start a podcast about the short stories of Deborah Eisenberg.

Showing up to speak on behalf of housing is a small, heroic thing you can do to improve your world. It is hard to overstate the positive impact of YIMBY presence at such hearings in recent years—you can completely flip the incentives for planners, commissioners, and politicians.

new George Saunders story!!

wow so the Louis CK novel is a horror story about book distribution

The piece of fiction published last year that gave me the most surprising jolt of readerly pleasure was a 15,000-word novella published directly to Substack. This got me wondering what else was happening literature-wise on the platform -- the subject of my piece up today at @newyorker.com.

Just sent out an installment of my extremely irregular newsletter of updates on my published writing: substack.com/home/post/p-...

I wrote about having a mystery tumor in my knee (and Jeff Tweedy) (and songs with no chorus) (or no verses? same thing I guess).

“I know many of my readers, particularly women, will read Jack as a sociopath,” the story’s narrator says. But “I really don’t think that’s fair.” www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...

Substack writers run the gamut from successful authors to passionate amateurs. Why are so many literary enthusiasts flocking to the platform?

Made a huge mistake and convinced my wife to try Andor. Now she likes it and I can't watch Andor while she's asleep.

If only the 2020 Freud revival has gone a bit further -- he is an for this AI moment. Death drive everywhere, a civilization boring holes in itself and bleeding out.

Across the board, this country is completely bereft of political and cultural leadership that isn't being offered by the right and tech billionaires. No alternative direction or vision. We're just running on cruise control towards oblivion.

yeah the general public is totally in the tank for this stuff

I just did a lesson with hs freshmen: we read Hemingway's 'Soldier's Home' together, stopped wherever anyone had a question/ thought and talked it out, linked it to other stories of war and alienation. Chromebooks away, phones in bin at front of class. Handwritten short answers at end. Good times.
