New in PN: Adam Serwer on America's "new dark age" "They see this as a long-term investment in a more ignorant population reliant on sources of information they can control — a docile population that can be easily manipulated." — @adamserwer.bsky.social

one thing about americans, we will make our own lives worse and more expensive if it means a group we think is “undeserving” gets punished

We're no longer the leader of the free world. We're no longer a beacon of democracy and justice. We're no longer the land of opportunity. We're no longer a nation in which no one is above the law. Our myths about ourselves are killing us. What to do? davidrothkopf.substack.com/p/we-are-not...

By the way a military parade when we’re not celebrating a war victory is something a dude who never served would do.

Worth noting: ICE is conducting these prominent mass detention operations in urban settings in states like California and Illinois and apparently leaving the low-hanging fruit of major agricultural centers in places like Texas and South Dakota (home of DHS Secretary Kristi Noem) largely untouched.

People don’t realize just how much damage this administration is doing to American science—and confidence in American science globally. Everyone I speak with inside is horrified…

So, so we'll said

One thing I said in my AMA is that whichever of the two seeks to deescalate first is likely the one most afraid of what the other can do or what the other knows. Want to know when the back-and-forth ended *immediately* today? When Musk learned that Trump was looking into his immigration paperwork.

Something I’m enjoying is watching the right try and make this situation “masculine” when it is two extremely catty and weak-seeming people having a petty, messy and passive aggressive argument in public, refusing to talk to each other at all

WE NEED TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE BOTH SIDES HERE

Let’s not forget that earlier today, this day was known as “we cannot build bananas in America” day. That is, until everything went bananas

Tesla stock is nosediving, as Musk fights with Trump and his cronies at DOGE continue to commit murderous crimes. NOW is the time to fight harder and make your voices heard. Join one of the many #TeslaTakedown protests around the world this weekend or create one in your city at Teslatakedown.com!

Not knowing about things doesn’t mean they’re not happening.

🔥The so-called BBB gives no thought to consequences. “Battery storage is absolutely one of the hardest hit, if not the hardest hit." The battery supply chain is heavily reliant on Chinese minerals/components, which would kick in the foreign entity requirements. .. 1/3 www.eenews.net/articles/how...

It's important to challenge this in the courts. It's also important to understand that Trump engages in performative behavior when he wants you to ignore something else he's doing. Don't look away.

Please send word to your representatives using RisistBot That we need NOAA and the national weather service! resist.bot/petitions/PV...

🚨Ready to crash Trump’s Birthday? Trump wants tanks, jets, and a $40M parade on his birthday. We're gonna remind him we don’t do kings in America. No Kings Day is June 14 across America. Our new episode breaks it all down: youtu.be/aje9Di7fYAs?...

🤔

It wouldn’t be hard to protect Medicaid and funding to rural hospitals and still reduce our nation’s ballooning debt and deficit. The Rs would just have to make the wealthy and corporations pay slightly more in taxes. (PS Rs are never serious about the debt and deficit when they are in power).

Gonna say something obvious to most: real masculinity defends the defenseless, punches up not down, has compassion, and fights only on behalf of others to battle injustice or evil. It doesn’t just lift weights and tweet in all caps and listen to Rogan and grow a beard to feel accepted by other men

As of today, Elon Musk is thought to be responsible for the death of 300,000 adults and kids due to the illegal closure of USAID (source: www.impactcounter.com/dashboard?vi...) That's a 103 deaths per hour, each day. And it will get worse. His legacy is one of death, destruction, and failure.

Elon's legacy ranges from gutting cancer research to setting in motion millions of deaths from starvation or disease. I'll be pushing for Congress to hold Elon & DOGE accountable—for every act of corruption, every disastrous consequence, and every law they have broken.

It's not a deportation if a human is removed from a country outside of a legal system. Call it what it is: human trafficking or kidnapping.

Great – looks as if the White House used AI to draft a health report and wound up inserting citations for articles that don’t exist. They put cheating high schoolers to shame. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/29/w...

Super wonky Senate precedent based rules now allow the Democrats to slow down proceedings after Republicans overruled the Senate parliamentarian

Someone needs to bring a big arena rock sized amplifier up in front of the White House and just put sad trombone on infinite loop.

It is easy to forget that when Paul Weiss and the other law firms that capitulated to Trump cut their deals they thought they would be viewed as savvy dealmakers. Now they look like craven fools and gutless cowards.

This article is exactly on target: "US defense giants produce exquisite systems, but often at boutique pace and boutique prices. There is no agile, scalable, layered, fast-response production network. No real surge capacity... they are not optimized for the speed or scale of modern war"

Breaking: HHS is canceling a $600 million contract with Moderna to develop, test, and license vaccines for flu strains that could trigger future pandemics, including the dangerous H5N1 bird flu virus.

Day 47 🇺🇸

The Trump administration uses the language of the law as cover to claim that it is complying with court orders when in fact it is not, Leah Litman and Daniel Deacon write. “We call this ‘legalistic noncompliance.’”

Slow & steady wins the race! Big win for my union AFGE. A judge granted a preliminary injunction ruling that President Trump cannot implement mass layoffs of federal workers without the approval of Congress which created these agencies. #UnionStrong ✊🏾 click.actionnetwork.org/ss/c/u001.Xa...

If you drive drunk and your negligence kills someone, you will likely be sentenced to years in prison. If you are a Boeing executive and your negligence kills 346 people, you likely will not receive any punishment at all. In America, we don't treat white collar crimes as crimes.

This is a pretty informative analysis. A nice review of the basics and then the main point: Question: Will the world economy crash? Answer: Maybe. Maybe not. Nobody knows because it all depends on Trump's whims... and that's really scary.

Can't help but feel we're living through an increasingly existential war between spectacle and substance with spectacle winning battle after battle after battle.
