Just please start exploring what other countries do different, why they hold the values they hold, what disadvantages it has - and how maybe it makes society better for them. Fundamental right doesn't exist in a vaccuum, and they have to be carefully traded off. It's utterly naive to not see that.

Just because something isn't encoded into law, doesn't mean it's not a position that an individual holds. And if you look at attacks on Freedom of Speech by the current POTUS, then you'll see stuff fall apart quickly, e.g. detaining people for political speech is happening right this second.

I completely get the American values, and what's encoded into law. I know the high standards for free speech, e.g. as established in Brandenburg v. Ohio. That's not a value that *all* Americans share, and it doesn't make it "the best." You can still compare it to other places, e.g. đŸ‡ŻđŸ‡”đŸ‡©đŸ‡ȘđŸ‡ŹđŸ‡§đŸ‡«đŸ‡·đŸ‡ŠđŸ‡șđŸ‡§đŸ‡·đŸ‡°đŸ‡·đŸ‡żđŸ‡Š

It's the same (deliberate?) ignorance to other viewpoints - I know a lot of Americans personally that would lock up someone for the wrong joke, especially concerning children.

Genuine question: isn't it embarassing to write that setence and then post it?

And there it is, the exact limited view that I’m referencing. You don’t even get my argument, and I’m not sure you’re trying. Your version of freedom isn’t uniquely good, it’s just fucking different. Look at other parts of the world, and learn to love the differences. Or continue like this: đŸ‡ș🇾🙉🙈đŸ‡ș🇾

It’s a topic with tons of nuance, and I’m not giving Brazil, the UK, Germany or anyone a blanket check to limit freedom of speech and personal freedom in general - it’s a high good, and it deserves to be protected! But other fundamental rights deserve to be protected, too - it’s not the only one.

“Freedom is when people (with power) can impose their will on others” seems to be the American definition, or perhaps “Freedom to not care about anyone but yourself” That’s certainly one way to approach this, but not the only one. And so many Americans don’t get that there’s other ways,
comment in response to post
There’s different kinds of freedom. Going out and not being shot by a gun? More freedom than having one. Not getting a slur in your face? Not having to listen to people deny the holocaust? Also freedom. Having a car accident and no medical debt? Freedom. US has a limited view of freedom.

The only source for the “tangled” definition i saw was dictionary.com, other places were mostly on the “messy” side But I haven’t done a full review or anything, this is me googling and trying to find some PD texts on my phone while scrolling in bed after afternoon nap :)
comment in response to post
Yeah, other sourced use the “hudel” definition, though, if you look online. I’m getting ever less secure, and I think the best way would be to get some native speakers of PD or look at actual usage in PD literature, but quite frankly, I’m too lazy for that :)

I agree, but pollution is more than PM 2.5. Standing next to a loud diesel engine on a bike is less fun than next to an EV bus. (More EV cars would be good, too, for that. And even better: fewer cars.)

comment in response to post
comment in response to post
comment in response to post
comment in response to post

Both @lesserspottedh.bsky.social and me agree about the meaning of Hudeln, and we both used it when growing up, and after looking at dictionaries, they also support our view verhudelt means “something that is not useable / less valuable because someone worked to sloppily/quickly (‘hudelte’)”
comment in response to post
I’m super familiar with Hudeln. I’m wondering about “ferhoodle”, which is harder for me to get the vibe of. Words often shift meaning over time, after all. They may represent different concepts now - it’s not straightforward. Is “ferhoodled” in PD closer to “tangled” or to “done sloppily”? Idk
comment in response to post
really verhudelt - the toddler didn’t slack off anything, the toddler didn’t “hudel”, it didn’t mess it up because it did something too fast, too sloppily. Hudeln is a word I / my family use natively, rural swabian region. It basically requires a job done poorly, and tangling is not necessarily.
comment in response to post
No, hudeln is more of a “work sloppily” vibe, there’s a person you can point to that caused the mess - and it’s not necessarily tangled. For example, you could “verhudel” the installation of a fridge so it’s crooked - not tangled. If a toddler messes up the contents of your purse, it wasn’t (1/2)
comment in response to post
Honestly, the more I look, the more I’m unsure. I think the only way to tell is get a native speaker, or do a search of PD literature on the actual use of the word - it’s not very commonly used from what I can find. And so a lot of conflicting definitions and etymology is floating about

And the car that is going clearly pas the red light in the opposite lane was too hard to spot from the video? Like, come on! It’s annoying enough to walk and cycle in the US, we don’t need to defend drivers breaking rules

> Any vehicular traffic approaching the intersection or a marked stop line facing a steady circular yellow shall stop at such point unless so close to the intersection that a stop cannot be made in safety From the MA road code, which I assume where this is, based on OP’s bio. Learn the road rules

I’m not sure that statement is true

cc @schmehvongestern.bsky.social Yeah, after looking at ferhoodled a bit more, it’s closer in meaning to verhudelt. I don’t think “tangled” is an apt translation to standard English, especially as the first translation - though I don’t speak Pennsylvanian Dutch. Yeah, “tangled” seems wrong
comment in response to post
Same thing here, this is surprising (but I don’t have a reason to disbelieve you), because it doesn’t fit the “tangled” definition. Now I wanna research this one deeper
comment in response to post
Huh, interesting- that doesn’t fit as well to the definition of “tangled” that @susiedent.com gave, but I believe you!

I read this as “kids” first and had two thoughts, in that order: a) why are there kids at a wrestling match? b) weird way to phrase it Kicks makes admittedly more sense

“Verheddert” in German > zu niederdeutsch Hede „Hanf-, Flachsabfall, Werg“[
] de.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/verhedd... So, a literal translation of that would be “mishemped” I’d say? Forehemped? Hm, so hemp waste is called tow, hards, so misharded? Misharded sounds good

It’s always interesting if bands that are built around “being comfy” do the whole “be cruel” thing. If Amazon does it, whatever. But if it’s something like Target, a place where people escape to, they just stop coming. It’s like making an unpleasant bookstore. There’s a reason they’re still comfy

What’s your favourite thing that’s named after you specifically? What’s the biggest physical monument to your legacy? And: if you invested a reasonable retirement fund (various definitions of reasonable), how big of a pyramid could you (have others) build for yourself with modern tools/ materials?
