My father took me to Ypres on a bike trip from the Netherlands when I was 8yo.
We stood in the trenches and noticed bullets that still remained in some trees 70 years later. As did many of the soldiers - hill after hill with white crosses.
Lasting impression.

Heartbreaking.
20 years old and only two weeks in the camp. Did he try to escape? Does anybody know what happened - apart from being pushed into a death camp?

Midsummer in Sweden is something special. One needs to experience it to get it. Family is second to none these days.
For some, even a "bigger event than Christmas"!

So I went out the door: but no celebrations, just a bit of rain.
Mostly people enjoying a day off.
Ever been in The Netherlands on King's day?

That seems a classic "Trolley Problem". Real world scenarios are usually more complicated. Though you can think of situations where pulling the lever may in principle be the moral thing to do, most outcomes (to continuation of the rails) cannot be predicted. Easy with hindsight. Tricky otherwise.

This painting was burned into my memory as a kid. The horrors of injustice.

I don't pretend to know anything. That is the inherent problem of knowledge; it is spread as truth. Rather, follow the evidence.

And so the meme spreads.
I don't think there is any evidence in support of this?

I feel the old discussion between Gould and Dawkins looming.... about punctuated equilibrium. I'm very curious where Richard stands nowadays.

Fascinating. I always have Dawkins "climbing Mount Improbable" in mind, getting to very complex (biological) systems by very small steps.
And being in awe when looking down from the mountain.

How quickly our brains associate, it is fascinating.
There is no dismantled frame, and yet we (or I, at least) see just that.

Whoever suggested that the love for art - or the ability to create art - is synonymous with good moral standing?
I have never understood this leap.

❤️ The influence of the emerging realm of photography is so obvious - I, for one, always think that is a wonderful phenomenon to see.
Breitner (1857-1923) is another example.
