🌱 Beginning tomorrow, June 24th at 9am CDT, our Digital Press is welcoming essays, poetry, and artwork on the theme of seeds. New article from @pancholewis.bsky.social! Fluid hope in a climate emergency: Lessons from an English citizens’ jury. Is it possible to have hope for the future in a climate emergency? doi.org/10.1080/0964...

This Thursday 7pm there's an online screening of 'The People vs Climate Change' a documentary about a citizens' assembly commissioned by parliament that I was involved in running back in 2019/20. It's a fantastic insight into what a CA is actually like + Q&A participants kinema.com/events/The-P...

NEW: Instead of confronting the home insurance crisis with the full force of public data and oversight, state regulators and lawmakers are trying to blindfold the public and hinder the institutions designed to help. They can't hide climate change. But they can foment a financial crisis.

This open access series of interviews that students in Germany did with climate scientists including @retoknutti.bsky.social, @rahmstorf.bsky.social, @akleidon.bsky.social, @frediotto.bsky.social, and others not on Bluesky is worth your time.

“People either don’t know that they were exposed, or they’ve forgotten that they were exposed or they don’t care,” Eddie Jones said. “Sad to say, there’s those who don’t care.”

Heads up, Wisconsin. Gas kills. “Pollution from the plants could contribute to heart attacks, ER visits, and long-term health harms over decades.” yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/06/prop...

Just finished this @zakpodmore.bsky.social insta-classic of western enviro lit. Hugely important book right now, not only for its masterful blend of Colorado River history & hydrology, but also its encouragement to imagine bigger, bolder futures. Let a free-flowing Glen Canyon, like Hayduke, live!

Surprise, surprise: Meta's Manhattan-sized data center is going to be powered by three new gas power plants. Residents of the nearby town have no idea how much their bill will increase: "It’s like building the power impact of a large city overnight” www.404media.co/a-black-hole...

Senate Republicans would like to light hundreds of millions of your taxpayer dollars on fire for no reason other than spite by forcing the Postal Service to mothball EV delivery vehicles and rip out already-installed charging infrastructure. www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

In his dope-fuelled interview with Rogan, Musk was very open about the ideological function of his Mars project: to reestablish the belief in techno-utopian progress which enables the masses to pin their hopes on technology (and its masters).

Job for social movements scholars, it would be great with someone interested in environmental/climate protests!

Gerhard Richter. Corsica. Oil on canvas, 1968.

Gerhard Richter wird im Ranking "Kunstkompass" unverändert als weltweit wichtigster Kßnstler gefßhrt

I’m starting (40 pages in) to read this collection of essays on Gerhard Richter by Benjamin Buchloh. It’s dense and long 600pp) But feels vital. Engaging with Richter certainly is. Four substantial paintings of his are on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario now.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s recent Times op-ed on AI regulation seems like a reasonable middle ground. But it is also a reminder of a threat on the horizon: an industry-scripted federal standard that would effectively eclipse state legislation, write Kate Brennan, Sarah Myers West, and Amba Kak.

These tech cities have shades of the Confederacy written all over it. It's just a modern day version prettied up with window dressing jargon.

The danger of merging tech and state with hyped technology “whose immediate harms are legion and benefits remain unproved” cannot be overstated. Like so many empire-building efforts before it, who it benefits, and who it hurts, is no surprise. Great discussion.

With @davidgilbert.bsky.social : We retraced the history of the #TeslaTakedown, which began with a BlueSky post + has evolved into a nationwide movement that's led thousands to protest outside Tesla dealerships. It's laying the infrastructure for other political fights www.wired.com/story/tesla-...

Democrats need to get up to speed on crypto and understand it as nothing less than a threat to the rule of law, and nation states themselves. There is no 'political compromise' to be had here. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/17/o...

See how Trump has everyone — critics, journalists, his opposition — using the ridiculous Orwellian name for his terrible bill? That is "framing" and propaganda in action. And 90% just fall for it. 🪝🐟 Why isn't there any defense against such manipulation?

"As parents, our job is to pay attention, to create possibilities--- to be careful matchmakers between our children and the Earth." Lots of good case studies and personal reflections on connections between people and land, focused on children. Also beautifully written.

We had a wonderful evening with Becky Barnicoat this week to celebrate the launch of her parenthood memoir, Cry When the Baby Cries from Jonathan Cape. Massive thanks to @beckybarnicoat.bsky.social and @jonathancape.bsky.social for making it all happen! And thanks to everyone who attended!

Releasing my book this week has been a ride: excitement, terror, insomnia. So I’ve been thinking of this review by @msrachelcooke.bsky.social a lot to keep me going. I think I’d have gone back into my burrow with out it. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/m...

If you use AI you’re accelerating climate crisis, polluting deprived communities, burning through water, giving bosses excuses to reduce workers rights and wages. It’s a moral and ethical degradation.
