Federal lawmakers say they have been denied access to an ICE facility in CA

"it's not peaceful for people to be on the highway" -LA Mayor Karen Bass right now. This is what I mean when I say the word "peaceful" as applied to protesters is about prescribing placidity, not nonviolence. Calmly marching on a freeway is pretty inarguably nonviolent. " Peaceful" you can debate

Tyranny requires constant effort. Oppression is the mask of fear. Authority is brittle. And most importantly: you are never truly alone when standing up to authoritarianism. You have friends everywhere.

Hello. I live in Los Angeles. The president is lying.

Whenever law enforcement agents are given a quota of a specific number of people to arrest or detain, especially with the WH policy director screaming at their superiors to hit those target numbers, bad things are going to happen. Quotas always result in civil rights violations.

Don't listen to the people bleating on social media that "no one is doing anything." What they are actually saying is that THEY aren't doing anything. The reality is that folks are working in every corner of the world, doing so much to keep themselves and others alive, while building the future.

major garbage can fire vibes

*Regina George voice* stop trying to make civil war happen

They seem to think there’s a right to anonymous policing, but not to anonymous protest.

These are literally not crimes

Almost verbatim, unbelievable

The news emphasizes low-level theft instead of corporate crime, pollution, and other predatory behavior.

I notice people calling what we’re seeing these last couple of days “riots.” I was here during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. That’s not what this is. Local police can handle this, but ICE needs to back off—especially with these amateur hires who don’t know what the f*ck they’re doing.

I… huh? What are the police firing back at

In Manhattan, ICE officers were forced to flee inside 26 Federal Plaza

My dad, who has lived under a dictatorship, knows one when he sees one. His first text this morning is that we are now officially in a dictatorship. It is all pretty grim.

"two months later, authorities have yet to provide any evidence that the more than three dozen people they arrested that night have connections to the gang..." www.texastribune.org/2025/06/04/t...

Sen Bernie Sanders (I-VA) just now on CNN: "We have a President moving this country rapidly into authoritarianism. He's suing media who criticize him. He's going after law firms that have clients who were against him. He's suing universities who teach courses he doesn't like"

The thing is, telling the objective truth about Stephen Miller invariably reads like an attack.

"Nick Stern, a British news photographer based in Los Angeles, is set to undergo emergency surgery for a wound sustained during the standoff between police and anti-Ice protesters in Los Angeles on Saturday."

Three months ago today, plain-clothes ICE agents abducted Mahmoud Khalil in his apartment building lobby after they'd followed him home. Free Mahmoud.

What better Ground Zero for him to try out his police state than Los Angeles—a city teaming with immigrants, with Hollywood celebrities who demonize him, and wealthy moguls who despise him? asks @rbreich.bsky.social: www.commondreams.org/opinion/resp...

Today, WH Border Czar Homan said California's Governor and LA Mayor Bass could be arrested if they interfered with ICE. This, after the arrest of a NJ Congresswoman & a Wisconsin Judge. This isn't what democracy is supposed to look like. www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

30 minutes after Trump declared the National Guard had been deployed and did a "great job" in LA, the Mayor of LA, Karen Bass, posted and clarified that the National Guard was not deployed in LA. All Trump and his administration do is lie, twist the narrative and claim a win.

“Firing back”

"they're just gonna use this as an excuse to crack down harder" yeah just like when you finally stood up to your childhood bully and got in trouble for it because he cried. you kinda had to do it anyway though. not just to prove to everyone else that you could fight back, but to prove it to yourself

Whatever happens in Los Angeles tonight is the playbook they’re going to deploy on blue districts across the country. And we warned people for months leading up to the election about exactly this.

The selective outrage of the gop is fascinating. The last time there were rumors of children being held in a basement against their will, someone showed up with an AR15 For this? Crickets. It's just interesting.

Tanks being moved into DC. National guard being mobilized in LA. Paramilitary thugs being unleashed across America. It's summer in America in fascism is in full bloom.

At ~6:15 p.m. tonight the Los Angeles City Attorney sent out a statement on the ICE raids. "The dangerous escalation of the tactics being used across Los Angeles undermines trust between our immigrant communities and government, and makes us all less safe." cityattorney.lacity.gov/updates/la-c...

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Only in LA would protesters think to tag the ground so it’s visible in helicopter shots.

“Tasted a little tear gas— tasted like fascism”

Are the unions going to strike over Huerta?

I don't think that the MSM will be useful in covering what's going on. We're going to have to rely on independent journalists and foreign correspondents.

We really don’t know what’s going to happen next. All the armchair gaming out feels less worth our time than focusing on what suffering ICE and cops are inflicting right now, in front of all of us, and all the things people are doing to protect and defend one another.

L.A. is a Mexican-American city. The majority of the population is made up of racial and ethnic minorities. We are all happy living together and really do not want to see our friends, neighbors and families being terrorized by federal robo-cops. This is bullshit.

Earlier today ICE agents hit someone with a car and tear gassed a neighborhood, sparking several fires and disrupting businesses. Immigrants, by contrast, did not.

There is no bigger story right now than the White House asserting that California residents are in a state "of rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States."

In awe of the brave people putting their bodies in front of ICE vehicles

I know that many don't want to hear this but we've been moving towards this current state of affairs over the past 65 years. And it's really been a bipartisan project. The expansion of the carceral state is the fuel for fascism. Folks have been trying to make this case for a long time.

Amateurs think tactics, professionals think logistics.

Gonna guess they're going to do another raid tomorrow and have the guard along ?

Cannot stress enough that this is a pitiful action by a weak, scared, pathetic group of insecure, wannabe authoritarians, and they should be mocked until the end of time for wanting to bring in the military over some people protesting them at a Home Depot.

The military isn’t being employed to carry out an immigration policy. The immigration policy, and especially the way the administration is choosing to carry it out, is an excuse to call out the military.

This is the cycle: raid, escalate, criminalize the response, send in troops. ICE raids are not neutral, they’re psychological warfare on communities, and now they’re using military backup. This isn’t enforcement. It’s state-sponsored intimidation.

What's going on in LA should be a real wakeup call for folks who don't already know that a fully liberal government can still wind up a police state and without some major change to the way we talk about the militarization of policing, nothing will get better
