"For the child born this summer in Texas, whose parents receive no documents, whose name never appears in any system, and who grows up asking why she can’t go on field trips, apply for scholarships, or open a bank account, the consequences are not legal theory. They are her life."

From the archives, by @kitoconnell.com: Lawrence v Texas was a landmark Supreme Court decision that changed lives for LGBTQ Americans everywhere, but it built on decades of activism and direct action in our state.

Disney and Universal recently filed suit against Midjourney, alleging the company has become a “bottomless pit of plagiarism,” and that it freely reproduces the studio's copyrighted content. The lawsuit has the potential to shape how intellectual property is treated in the AI era.

I haven't ranted on here because I ranted myself out aloud and in discord channels but... today was a bad day for people who like the american constitution

As a queer author, thank you for buying our gay books in response to the challenges and bans and court decisions, but I implore you to go stand up for your public libraries and schools—they’re our greatest advocates, and they’re kind of the main target of this whole effort.

This is so true. 99% of book bans have the intended effect: you never hear about those books again. The 1% of banned books that become infamous bestsellers elsewhere are not the norm.

The Supreme Court's conservative supermajority has set up a system that sharply restricts what the government can do lawfully but puts almost no limits on what the government can do lawlessly. That seems bad.

“The discontinuation of data from (these satellites) will severely impede and degrade hurricane forecasts, affecting tens of millions of Americans who live along its hurricane-prone shorelines this season and beyond…”Without this imagery, there will be increased risk of a ‘sunrise surprise…’””

I take deep, personal offense if I find out you found good hermit crab content and didn't send it to me immediately

by age 30 you should have one friend for every major animal group to spam. seen a good crab post? forward to your token crab person. bat post for the bat person. cicada post for the cicada person. bear post for the bear person. jellyfish post for the jellyfish person. and so on and so forth.

I was in the NSF building once. I went to serve on a review panel: I and six other scientists put aside our own work to travel to the NSF HQ and evaluate our peers' research proposals, working together for two intense days to prioritize support for the most impactful new science. I'll miss it.

I made the podcast a Bluesky profile just so we could acknowledge Ann flippin’ Leckie acknowledging our dumb meme Thanks Ann! I rant about how much I love your books on a regular basis.

Learning about Lumumba in college marked a major turning point in my education; my perspective of the world shifted and significantly broadened.

Texas cities would benefit from RCV after Johnson debacle but there's no way the feudal Lord Abbott would allow it in his owned lands...

What actor's expression in a movie will stay with you for the rest of your life?

They are kicking the National Science Foundation out of their 8-year-old HQ building, with no alternative plan for housing staff, in order to make a gym for Secretary of Housing & Urban Development Scott Turner and his family.

GASP

I saw so many people talking about how Mamdani and Lander were clearly running because they love their city and want to make life better there, while Cuomo seems to hate and fear it, and that feels like the key piece of this campaign that could be replicable by progressives everywhere

Does this mean every copyright page going forward should include some kind of "no LLM training" addendum to the copyright notice...? Squinting at the full assertions made in here feels like a glorious antihero could use this courts decision as the legal basis for training some alt-Disney works...

I am not exaggerating when I say the Supreme Court’s unsigned, unexplained order yesterday is the worst thing it has done since Trump returned to office. And not just on the merits—it’s also an unfathomably dangerous green light for Trump to flout lower court orders. slate.com/news-and-pol...

One reason I think it’s important to continue to highlight the disparity on our streets is that most people just don’t see it. Despite it being obvious to some, so many people don't have clarity because we have done such an incredible job of normalizing this imbalance.

What is the argument that this isn’t driving up energy use again? Enough to power a million homes. Millions of gallons of water used per year. All for one company, Anthropic. www.nytimes.com/2025/06/24/t...
