Soooo it’s 8:30pm and @antonygreenelec.bsky.social has called it! That’s probably one of the earliest calls, polls only closed 2.5 hours ago! Labor wins the 2025 election! Number of seats are still being counted. Overseas people — the right wing Conservative Party did not win 🥳 #AusVotes

NASA’s SPHEREx Telescope Just Switched On. Time to Map the Entire Universe in 3D gizmodo.com/nasas-sphere...

Staff members at the US National Science Foundation (NSF) were told on 30 April to “stop awarding all funding actions until further notice,” according to an email seen by Nature. https://go.nature.com/44Ugf9V

The average American has three friends

In case you don't know why this in particular is happening, most of those plots you see about how the planet is warming more and more rapidly? They come from GISS data.

If you're wondering what the Roman Space Telescope will do, think of the Hubble Space Telescope but with a field of view that is 100x wider. Roman will image 50x more sky in 5 years than Hubble did in 30 years. 🧪

We’re searching for a scientist to lead Murriyang, our iconic Parkes radio telescope. Applications due 18th May. Full details here: jobs.csiro.au/job/Parkes%2...

Astronomers will keep pointing out to folks that the Roman telescope is *already built* and is being prepped for launch *next year* and I know we live in a stupid timeline but cancelling Roman at this point would be SO STUPID.

All new research grants have been frozen at the US National Science Foundation — an action apparently ordered by the Department of Government Efficiency https://go.nature.com/42pvdDe

A new study models the impact of the implosion of U.S.-funded disease treatment and prevention in the developing world — and suggests that Elon Musk and Marco Rubio will go down as among history’s greatest monsters if funding and effective administration are not restored.

Indeed I’m fearful. We aren’t testing much any more. We’re firing everyone in govt who can help and stripping funding from academic & industry scientists who can fill the gaps. H5N1 is a real threat & US policy puts us all at risk. Me & colleagues Kay Russo, Kamran Khan, & Keith Poulsen discuss👇🏻

About the leaked NASA budget proposal that kills an almost-ready-to-launch flagship mission: "It sets back a program that is clearly the leading program in the world—in a historic fashion. You take that program and shoot it through the head." www.scientificamerican.com/article/nasa...

Hundreds of terabytes of NOAA datasets are about to be deleted. Not just climate data, but a ton of vital Earth science, coastline, sea level, gravity mapping, and oceanographic data. Downloads are slow! Get what you need, and work with the greater community to export and back up the rest!

New preprint finding that eliminating US global health funding over the next fifteen years would cause: - 15.2m deaths from AIDS - 2.2m deaths from TB - 7.9 additional child deaths

#Radioastronomy #job alert. We’re looking to hire a Lead Scientist for Parkes Observatory. Murriyang, our 64m radio telescope, aka The Dish is currently getting an exciting upgrade with commissioning of the CryoPAF instrument. Check out this job at CSIRO: jobs.csiro.au/job/Parkes%2...

More bad news for science: Trump is attempting to cancel emergency funds appropriated by Congress. This would affect what is supposed to be the most powerful supercomputer available to academic researchers working on non-classified projects as well as the US's involvement in 30m-class telescope(s) 🧪

And the call for SMEX proposals went from March to April to 'not April'. 🫠

From Skylar Grayson/Cole Meldorf/Abby Lee/Drew Lapeer/Catherine Slaughter: NASA is facing severe budget cuts that would cancel missions ready for launch, put tens of thousands out of jobs, and set science back decades. We need your help to ask Congress to prevent this! astrobites.org/2025/04/15/h...

The American Astronomical Society is gravely concerned by the deep cuts to NASA science funding reported to be in the draft President’s Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2026. Read more here: aas.org/press/aas-st... and take action now: aas.org/urge-nasa-su...

Hey! It's bad! arstechnica.com/space/2025/0... 2/3 cut in astrophysics 2/3 cut in heliophysics 50% cut in Earth science 30% cut in planetary science This is just such an incredible self-own, what are we doing?

BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

Had a *fantastic* visit and colloquium today from Mike Brown, aka @plutokiller.com! All about the search for Planet Nine complete with fun orbital mechanics. Btw Mike says if @vrubinobs.bsky.social comes online in October they’ll find it by end of the year. 🤯 🔭🧪

I explained it to several young teens today: imagine we wanted you to become more self-sufficient in the kitchen, so we decided to charge you $20 every time you got takeout. But also we have no food in the house, we won't let you go to the store, and also you don't know how to cook.

Today's Headlines

Cory Booker has broken Strom Thurmond’s record. “I’m here despite his speech,” Booker said.

SPHEREx's first images! 🌈 Processed with rainbow hues to represent a range of infrared wavelengths, the new pictures indicate the astrophysics space observatory is working as expected. IPAC will perform science data processing and analysis once available. spherex.caltech.edu/news/nasa-s-...

Changes to ARC grants will make it harder for Australia to combat Trump chaos, researchers warn

From a spokesperson just now: “NASA is committed to optimizing its workforce and resources in alignment with [DOGE] initiatives. As part of this effort NASA has identified and phased out $420 million in contracts that were determined to be redundant or misaligned with our core mission priorities."

Thanks @wired.com for sharing & contextualising this news. Research like atomic spectroscopy is foundational to many areas of science & should be supported.

Oh, and ESA just made a really cool video that shows you just how much you'd have to zoom in to find JADES-GS-z14-0 on the sky. It's amazing to think about just how many other galaxies we haven't seen yet but we know are out there. www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QjS...

It's #Euclid data release day! @esa.int and the Euclid Consortium are making 63 deg² of Wide Survey data available to the world. Imaging and spectroscopy data, catalogues and masks for 20+ million galaxies, quasars, stars and substellar objects. #astronomy #science #space 1/4

Here's part two of my series with @brettfavaro.bsky.social on tips for speaking to journalists as a scientist, this week focusing on things every scientist should know about how interviews work (and do not work). Please read and share! www.southernfriedscience.com/advice-for-t... 🧪#SciComm

📣 Euclid releases first batch of survey data, including a preview of its very own deep fields! With just one scan, #ESAEuclid has already spotted 26 million galaxies 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... Let's explore the treasure trove that our #DarkUniverse detective has uncovered 🧵 1/ 🔭🧪 #astrosci

First images from the Square Kilometre Array Low Frequency (SKA-Low)! Taken with only 1,024 of the planned 131,072 antennas, and it's already looking good :) #RadioAstronomy

The first @esa.int Euclid data release is going live THIS WEEK - it's going to be awesome! I hope Euclid can be as transformational for extragalactic astronomy as Gaia has been for Milky Way astronomy!

God, that was hard to bear. Students told a physics town hall that grad schools have rescinded admission. NSF proposals are censored for words like “bias,” even when the meaning is technical. Physics curricula are being banned by school districts for encouraging girls. #APSGlobalSummit2025 #APSMarch

🥁 #ESAEuclid is getting ready to release the first batch of survey data! Watch this space on 19 March at 12:00 CET / 11:00 GMT. A video showcasing the latest treasures uncovered by our #DarkUniverse 🕵️ detective will premiere at the same time 👉 www.youtube.com/europeanspac... 🔭🧪 #astrosci

Maria Drout is taking about the CASTOR mission right now at #TFS25, and I just think we should all pause for a second to acknowledge this very astronomical beaver logo 🦫🤩 🔭🧪

There's so much at risk at NASA, but we can't let Elon Musk destroy the Voyager Interstellar Mission. This beautiful thread captures it all. 🧪🔭🪐

See that little gray rock? That's Deimos, the mysterious outer moon of Mars, spied yesterday as the Hera spacecraft buzzed by the Red Planet. Little Deimos is just 12km (10 miles) wide. Such a cool shot. 🧪🔭 www.esa.int/Space_Safety...

NASA and SpaceX stood down from yesterday’s launch attempt of SPHEREx and PUNCH due to weather at the launch site and a SPHEREx ground data-flow issue. The next launch attempt is Tuesday, March 11 with liftoff targeted for 8:10 pm PDT (11:10 pm EDT). blogs.nasa.gov/spherex/

There's nothing like the exquisite pain of a first quintile rejection.

ohhhh, another Aussie science institution is now on BlueSky!
