We did this for my graduate last year; promised a computer as a graduation gift. Bought it piece by piece for them to build themselves, and saved probably $1K on what ended up being a pretty decent gaming machine.

making zines by hand— scanning, assembling, cutting, awling, folding, stapling— is a way of still existing in my work after it leaves me. this is still a conversation between us. you can feel and see my hand in the physical form. it's unique, so you specifically the one conversing with it. etc
