Because people are people. Yes - Apple knows how to make money because they ask a lot for upgrades. But their machines are solid, efficient and hassle free. Sure, someone on a budget or a penny-pincher won't be buying. But if you have the £££, why not spend it on something you like?

Because now lots of it is made in cheap countries in automated factories. In the 80s Euro Macs were assembled in Ireland. Dell had factories in Europe until the mid 2000s. When I was in uni lots of us had summer jobs at Nokia assembling phones. In the 90s I also had a French-made Thomson TV.

The C64's price plummeted because of the popularity of the machine and cheaper manufacturing processes which were introduced around 1983. Economy of scale at work.

All computers were expensive back then. Disc drives in 1978 were a big massive - wow. But you needed them for professional applications.

The first ones were really expensive but soon the prices literally plummeted. Same for DVD players after they were released.
