Numerous sci-fi shows refer to such devices as "comms". It's a short, simple name that I think would suit our devices better.
We hardly use them to speak: we use them to communicate.
Terminals - which would inevitably be shortened to "terms" - could suit just as well. 😜

Modern smartphones aren't really telephones anymore - devices for transmitting sound across distance - rather they're more like the personal communicators seen in many science fiction worlds. Maybe it's time we stopped calling them phones and came up with a more relevant term or metaphor for them.
