Definitely agree on the cultural point too - they’ve found a way of making pampering social acceptable and fashion for men’s hair is just shorter than it was a few years ago, hence more demand for the services

How would you level up Scarborough and Blackpool, out of interest?

Counterpoint: London is almost 10x the size of Leeds (also Brighton has grown a lot in the last few decades)

Oh and not that it matters as much as good road/rail but Scarborough Athletic are in the National League North whereas Brighton and Hove Albion are 7th in the Premier League

It’s also good to consider the seaside towns that are doing well - Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Staithes, etc. They’re also not well connected *but* they’re a lot smaller so people are willing to travel for the quaintness. Scarborough and Blackpool have the worst of both worlds - big and cut off

My Grandad (born 1928) told me about seeing kids in the playgrounds with Diptheria in the 30s, it sounded awful. We don’t know how lucky we are

In late 2012 I was working with Michael Gove, Dominic Cummings, Liz Truss and Chris Wormald. If you'd told me that by 2025 Wormald would be the most powerful of the four that would have made complete sense. But the path to that would have, um, surprised me.

In the late 70s Jimmy Savile was thrown off a P&O cruise and barred from all future sailings for chasing a 14 year old girl around the ship - something that wasn’t known publicly until after he died

Ireland is such a demographic “what if” isn’t it? Imagine how different the 20th century would have been with an extra 10+ million population nation in Northern Europe
