in a nutshell, so much white makes camera reduce brightness because it thinks it's a "bright day". I tried upping brightness a bit to show the difference :)

You can potentially try this out by replicating this same conditions; having a dark background partial, and white ground, with mini in center. Try to focus on the dark background, observe, and then focus on the white ground. If it's doing it you should see the overall lighting level change each time

In short; in automatic mode camera tries to balance the overall lighting of the scene with the subject area, and because you have a dark panel in the background, it's attempting to balance with it, as opposed to try to balance with just white :)
