i'm not saying the head of machine learning at meta is an idiot, but the math behind ml isn't rocket science and yet it fills thousands of posts on medium of wannabe data scientists.

i find it fascinating that, for all my kinda-to-very-left-of-center positions, it's all rooted in exactly this small c conservative love of america and what it can and should stand for.

I'm sitting here, thinking about this weird onion from the mountains of Iran, wondering what we can learn from Vavilov and his team. In another era of anti-science, what's our take away?
One thing seems to be: believe in a better future, plan for it, & fight to make it happen, at any cost.

His pseudoscience said if you expose a plant to new conditions, it's progeny will be adapted to this change. Winter wheat became spring wheat, just as a peasant farmer became a collectivized comrade. You just needed exposure to change
Under Lysenkoism, famines killed ~25-75 mil in USSR & Mao China

Horrifically, while Vavilov's research is revered today, things... didn't go great with Stalin
Stalin's agronomist, Trofim Lysenko, declared Mendelian genetics "bourgeois" lies. Geneticists were fired, arrested, tortured, jailed. Most were outright shot, or, like Vavilov, died hungry & sick in jail

He travelled the globe, hunting down wild relatives of our food crops, partially to build stronger crops & to understand the history of domestication & the movement of people
Plz get lost in the coolest wiki page, history/places of domestication mostly built by him
