Article is paywalled so I don't know if this is clarified therein - but why "takeover" and "to maintain"? Oddly vague and seemingly deliberately euphemistic. Wouldn't it be more apt to use "invasion"/"annexation" and "to occupy"? Why the cloudy terminology?

Thanks, but could you please expand on that? Because to me, the quotation marks indicate that Will is saying this in the voice of someone else (from context, probably some part of the political left), e.g. accusing *them* of not taking trans rights seriously enough?
