extraordinary that Thames Water executives are getting *new* bonuses, this time as a result of the £3bn rescue loan from the spring - which loads the company with interest rates of nearly 10% via me and Gill Plimmer www.ft.com/content/1f6d...

Well well. More Labour warfare for welfare.

When you’re the apex predator in the global financial food chain but forget that half your bulk is foreign money & that your service export is not rocket science and is easily re-shored. Imho, private equity support for Trump bc of tax & dereg is a stunning case of elite delusion. on.ft.com/42l7J28

The "Silicon Six" are still paying low tax rates on their profits. This report says they have a combined $82.5 *billion* in "uncertain tax positions" - tax they might have to pay, if tax authorities challenge them and win.

THE RISE OF END TIMES FASCISM My first major piece of the new Trump era, co-written with @astra.bsky.social. The governing ideology of the far right has become a monstrous, supremacist survivalism. Our task is to build a movement strong enough to stop them. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...

Absolutely worth a read: taking on corporate power in global food chains. The abstract is basically a concept note for a global campaign.

🔈 Excited to share our new paper, led by the brilliant @katesievert.bsky.social, in which we encourage a common framing & approach for addressing unsustainable production & consumption of both ultra-processed foods 🍩🥤 & intensively produced animal-source foods 🥩 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

A busy week with another newly published paper 📣 Our work in Food Ethics tackles the financialisation of food systems—showing how ultra-processed foods (UPFs) and intensively produced animal-source foods (ASFs) share common structural drivers. 🧵 link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Just published! 📢 Our new paper in The Journal of Peasant Studies examines how national champion policies have reshaped global meat supply chains—concentrating power, limiting competition, and benefiting transnational investors. 🧵 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

So nice to see this article with Eric Helleiner on history and theory of green finance finally published! It's part of a special issue in Competition and Change on the IPE of Green Finance edited by Sarah E. Sharma and @mbabic.bsky.social Abstract & link ⬇️ journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

The European Commission has just made it clear that the rigid constraints they had placed on public finance were totally artificial. They have now lifted them to enable massive military production.

Amazing how war clarifies the macrofinancial mind

🚨 More than 80 independent nutrition scientists have signed an open letter raising concerns over an industry-backed effort to redefine the Nova food classification system—the very framework that has helped expose the harms of ultra-processed foods (UPFs). 🧵1/7 drive.google.com/file/d/1SDWK...

🚨 US private equity firm KKR has made a £4 bn bid for a majority stake in Thames Water. KKR also own 25% of Northumbrian Water. Every time you pay a water bill, cash flows into the pockets of overseas investors. Water shouldn't be up for sale. It should be in public hands.

Multilateral mechanisms are all the more crucial in times like these - but I didn't really know how they work! Writing the 2023 @hlpe-fsn.bsky.social #equity report then following the #UN-CFS #policy convergence process taught me a lot, so I thought I'd share what I learned in a blog 👇

Today is publication day! I explain how agricultural inputs - which weren't even widely traded market goods 200 years ago - have become giant industries dominated by just a handful of transnational firms today. mitpress.mit.edu/978026255170... Many thanks to those who helped me along the way!

For all the hoopla about (cheap) renewables growth, 2024 saw yet another annual increase in global power generation from fossil fuels (coal and gas both up) and associated CO2 emissions. Europe the only major region where emissions from power generation fell. Just awful.

Vultures like Elliott will see us all burn. We know that. But we're in a moment of clarity - the vulture position has won. The supperrich can't maintain their sky high profits without fossil fuels & unlimited extraction. It is capitalism *or* life. www.ft.com/content/25cd...

2024 marked 70 years since the tobacco industry, faced with mounting evidence of the harm caused by its products, issued their “Frank Statement” to smokers reassuring them that the link between smoking and lung cancer was yet to be proven.🧵

“Hunger persists because we allow injustice to endure. If we are serious about ending it, we need bold political action, not just scientific breakthroughs.”

Only political will can end world hunger: Food isn’t scarce, but many people can’t access it

My newest on Substack looks at the protesters who took over Bill Gates's book tour. Try as he might, our 'good billionaire' can no longer hide from the growing chorus of critics calling him an oligarch. That's a very good thing. timschwab.substack.com/p/climate-ac...

Happy to share this piece I wrote (with input from @ipes-food.org colleagues) as a counter to the recent call for more technological 'moonshots' to end hunger. No amount of technology can ensure people are well fed - we need political will to tackle inequities theconversation.com/only-politic...

Important piece by our @jennifer-clapp.bsky.social Only political will can end world #hunger & confront its major drivers : conflict, poverty, inequality, economic shocks & escalating climate change. There's enough food to go around. But a lack of political will to get it to the hungry.

As the Trusk regime is wrecking the state apparatus that brought us the IRA, it's more urgent than ever to understand the politics of green macrofinancial regimes. Here's a 🧵 on the result of @danielagabor.bsky.social and I wrecking our brains for four years. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

This is significant. There is more than enough #food in the world for everyone. But not the right diverse, nutritious foods for everyone to be #healthy. There's too many starchy staples. But not enough fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, & seeds. Our #foodsystem puts quantity over quality.

BIG NEWS: Senator @davidshoebridge.bsky.social made a speech in the Australian Senate today warning of the malign influence of the #AtlasNetwork and its latest coal-billionaire funded disinformation engine Advance (formed by the IPA and this CIS). First mention of #AtlasNetwork in #AusPol Hansard.
