Been getting some good feedback at my new job.

The statement was just abbreviated to make it more punchy. No deception or trickery was intended. (Yes, I think the term "clickbait" implies deception/trickery.)

I expected it to be unclear at first, but easily clarified once I explained that I was talking about comparing an equal quantity of the two. In previous times of explaining this I've never dealt with nearly this much back and forth about it. That's why I'm finding it frustrating.

But absent that kind of specification, I wouldn't agree that in the abstract steel is heavier than feathers.
comment in response to post
I'd say that if you asked me "which is heavier, steel or feathers", I'd say the question is unclear and you need to specify the objects better first. If you specify that it's comparing two equally sized boxes of each, then I'd say the box of steel is heavier.

The fact that that's a common trick/joke exactly demonstrates that it is a silly thing to do. Doing it is a common heuristic, but common heuristics can often be wrong.

It's just that comparing gases to non-gases isn't something most of us do in our daily lives.
comment in response to post
I didn't see you make that suggestion until just now. I know it's not the first thing that some people think of, but it is common enough for many people to think of quantity as a count. And when comparing gases to non-gases, I think it's the most reasonable thing to use.

"Weight" only has anything to do with density if the things you are weighing have been equalized for volume. But that's a silly thing to do, especially in this case. And I never said anything about measuring equal volumes of water and air. I said quantity, by which I meant number.
comment in response to post
Look, what I'm saying is simple, and you're starting to frustrate me. Take an equal number of water molecules and air molecules. Make certain that the air molecule sample has the same basic mix as the atmosphere. Place both samples on a scale. The water sample will weigh less than the air sample.
comment in response to post
Weight is the force of gravity times the mass of an object. Though often we use mass and weight interchangeably, i.e., when we "weigh" something in kilograms, which is a unit of mass. Density has nothing to do with it.
comment in response to post
The number of molecules is independent of density.

By "air" I mean the standard current atmosphere of Earth. This is about 20% O2 and 80% N2. Everything else is too trace for weight discussion. .2*32+.8*28 is approximately 29.
comment in response to post
No, I mean when you take the same quantity. A single unit of water is lighter than a single unit of air. H2O has a molecular weight of 18, air, to first approximation, a molecular weight of 29.

I know you weren't actually asking for fun facts, but I find this fact too fun to not share, given the slightest hint of prompting.
comment in response to post
Fun fact: air is heavier than water.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Mrs. Dalloway, in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife. (Not a 1-1 replacement, but I hope you'll forgive me for the result.)

Well, it's clearly the same as 5 10s, plus the sun of 1 to 4, which I have memorized as 10 for some reason, plus another 5, so 50+10+5 or 65.

Maybe optimistic of me, but just continuing to put out good content, independent of whatever is the hot topic of the moment, is good enough. I've loved your videos where you just do some basic problem solving or discussed a recent paper/experiment.
