Magnus and Kup have tension between them since Magnus is seen as privileged by Kup, but Elita grows on Magnus since he’s a stickler for following orders from her and Optimus, so she sees him as the obvious successor for next Prime over Hot Rod

Right on the dot! Would definitely take a page from Kung Fu Panda 4 shockingly and have Optimus choose Hot Rod, much to the dismay of characters like Elita. Optimus sees himself in Hot Rod

Megatron and Optimus want the same thing but refuse to let the other gain anymore ground on Cybertron and the sequel can bring an end to the Quintesson War, but the Civil War follows right after

Might be sacrilegious but I would introduce Hot Rod in Two, and have Prime deliberately choose a Cybertronian who he thinks can help carry the lineage of his actions as well as the Primes before him

That's sort of where I'm going with. Mainly that the Quintessons are the bigger threat at the moment
and the Decepticons aren't the real problem in Optimus' eyes (whether fear of confronting him again or just worried about igniting a larger issue)
