I saw "Elio" yesterday and it is a really good film. Fun story with a lot of heart and plenty of humor. It's getting good reviews from professional critics and an "A" from the Cinemascore polling firm, so hopefully word-of-mouth will help it recover from the weak opening.

Disneyland is putting tickets on sale for its annual Halloween parties this week. They start in August...

And, of course, it was the second time Brooks did that successfully after "The Producers".

At least the filmmakers got a really good Elmer Bernstein score to help make up for the annoying title song.

Particularly his stridently negative views on law enforcement are increasingly hard to disagree with despite 50+ years of exposure to the concept of police as heroes. His views on immigration also are more progressive than I'm yet quite ready to embrace, but I find myself drifting in that direction.

I will also add that conversations with my 21-year-old kid have been really eye opening with regards to the generational differences in views on a number of progressive topics. I've come around to his way of thinking on some topics, but it can still be a struggle to relate.

If you are looking for someone not already in office, then I agree that I'm not sure who that would be. Coming up with someone non-divisive is tricky too as the left isn't all that united on a number of issues at this point.

I also wouldn't dismiss the influence of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, although I think both are probably past the point where they would be viable presidential candidates.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez immediately comes to mind as a talented speaker who is also fairly young and pretty good at building a movement. Among older politicians, I that Governor JB Pritzker of Illinois and Tim Walz have been pretty effective speakers.

At least without the word "Annie" in front of it.

From the articles I've seen, I think it was less a reaction to the 35mm print than it was that people are now used to the upgraded special effects of the special edition making the 1977 effects work seem crude. Remember that anyone younger than around 30 has likely never seen the original version.

I went to a midnight opening night showing of Dick Tracy where the admission ticket was printed on a T-shirt. I probably still have that shirt stored away in a box somewhere. I can't remember for certain, but it's pretty likely I went to see Gremlins 2 later that day.

Sure, but why are they still defining "breaking even" as making back their cost via theatrical receipts alone?
comment in response to

Definitely Ghostbusters. I admit that Ghostbusters was the one I went to see that day. In my defense, I had already seen Gremlins at a sneak preview a couple weeks earlier. :)

At the Infinity Wars concert I attended at the Hollywood Bowl last summer, Giacchino came out at the end of the concert and handed the conductor sheet music with the Fantastic 4 logo. The orchestra then premiered this piece. Definitely the best way to hear it the first time. The crowd went nuts.

My commute to work goes past the site of the Burbank Fry's (the UFO location) and I sadly saw them tear it down over the period of a couple of weeks last month.

I'm seeing Jaws with the Los Angeles Philharmonic playing the score live to film at the Hollywood Bowl July 4th weekend. Can't wait!

He didn't write the theme song. That's by Danny Elfman.

He was actually fired from the show in 2017 and unsuccessfully tried to sue them over it. Hans Zimmer's company took over the music on the show.

The Fry's Electronics ad used to be pretty much the first thing I looked at when opening the Sunday Los Angeles Times.

I'm really happy to see them acknowledging it too. I loved the film and have hoped that it would eventually find an audience. I particularly appreciate the focus on the score, which I think may be Giacchino's best work.

It was also the most confusing possible introduction to the music of Henry Mancini.

Replacing Biden as candidate was "ignoring" the problem?

It was a 20th Century Fox Television production so Disney would now own The Tracey Ullman Show entirely.

My guess is that someone on his staff will create a fairly reasonable statement that they will put out under his name. He will then contradict it with something completely tasteless soon after.

Great review of one of my favorite scores, which comes from a criminally underappreciated film.

You make a good point there. I strongly believe that most rank-and-file Democrats (and probably most independents) genuinely like Joe Biden. Even if they thought he was less than effective or shouldn't have run, I think most people see him as a kindly grandpa type. Demonizing him just feels weird.

I think there are a lot of brands more famous than HBO, probably including Warner Bros, but the real mistake was removing a brand that is largely synonymous with quality and prestige.

I wonder what year those are. I have a hunch that if that $9/month is adjusted for inflation, the price is probably quite a bit cheaper today.

I remember buying both Kamen's RH: Prince of Thieves and Horner's The Rocketeer on CD at the same time in 1991 and then pretty much continuously going back and forth between the two CDs for the next few weeks.

They forgot to include laundry detergent and coins for a laundry mat, since they are recommending not bringing enough clothing for the length of the trip. At least I hope they aren't recommending that people not change their underwear daily...

"Entitlement" has a legal definition basically amounting to benefits that are guaranteed by contract or law. Legally, Social Security is definitely an entitlement. I get that language can shift over time, but it strikes me as risky to push lawmakers to stop using the correct legal term.
