The only case where I try to act as if it doesn't, is when it comes to empathy. If someone's behaving in a bad way, it's just a result of a bunch of chain reactions. If you have the power to do so, see if there's tweak you can make in their environment or mind to make an impact on those processes.

But also, if free will doesn't exist, by definition, there's nothing you can do with that information. So the onl ing you can do is live your life assuming it does exist.

I also don't have the disposable income to pay artists for art that I use in side projects. And so I couldn't help but feel excited at the prospect of being able to include visuals that are better than I could ever make without the help fo these tools. I just wish they were trained ethically.

Nah, you're not coming across as combative. I think for me it boils down to this tension: I'm visually impaired. And while I've seen visually impaired people make some fantastic visual art, I do still see it as a hinderance to really learning that skill myself.

But this is a very loosely held belief. I can see arguments for refusing to use any genAI art at all. Sorry for the flurry of posts. If my thoughts were clearer, I could've written them more succinctly.

At least for my own standards, I think I'm ok with using AI art for things that I'm either just sharing with a small group of friends, or for something I'm putting out into the world for free. I would not want to profit off AI art, though, unless I'm 100% sure the training data was licensed.

If I want to create a project, based on my own creative idea, that includes some graphics, I can now do so. I can now to some extent express a creative vision through iterating with genAI, that I couldn't before.

I also think it's disgusting that these models were trained on the works of others without a license, let alone the original creator's explicit permission for their art to be included in training data. But OTOH, I can't deny that it also gives me a level of independence I haven't had before.

TBH I am torn on this in many ways. I agree that many people/companies are adopting AI too eagerly when they definitely should be doing the thinking/creation themselves.

It's the same problem on all fronts. They're not science literate, but they make healthcare/education/funding decisions based on gut feelings and bad ideology. It's made worse by their disdain for experts

Agreed. Well, I don't want gas, but other than that, fully agree. It's a PITA trying to find an induction stove that I can adjust with physical buttons or dials.

This goes beyond cars, though. Every appliance now has touch screens and capacitive touch areas. You're entirely taking away the sense of touch as a way to navigate these things.

Spare your back, and skip Loup Garou though. I still have fond childhood memories from that coaster, but those smooth rides are long behind us.

Hey Rutger.

It'salso isimilar to "organic" in that a lot of products want you to think they have it. I recently read a website claiming their chat was "end to end encrypted using TLS".
