But the recent trees are deep in people’s yards so not as accessible without asking
And really too young to create that sense of abundance and free for all

Most all the other feral apples in this neighborhood out here are Gravenstein, very obviously so, but I’ve also seen yellow transparent.
And they’re much younger trees.
And more recently like the last 10 years people have put in a huge variety of trees … with shoddy pruning but oh well

It’s the biggest oldest apple around here
I think it predates the development of this area so I bet older than the 1940s
I am also curious about variety, if it’s a chance apple it’s quality is pretty good for a seedling
And deep red , makes me think of a King David apple

i used to walk down to the old railroad line when i was a kid and find iron ties and bolts and glass telegraph conductors in the creekbed and see the rectangles of daffodils blooming in the grass seed fields where farmhouse gardens used to be

On the horizontal?
Usually the rule is don’t cut them too hard in the summer while they’re still young ,,, but if they’re like a foot past yeah I guess cut back to a bud that’s only a little past
Might encourage fruiting spurs

337 miles of the 101 just fucking totally unmaintained! for those of you who don't live here, the depicted images are not an infrequent occurrence for that road! good luck! keep your head on a swivel if you're on vacation on the beautiful oregon coast!

for the whole state! the entire state of oregon! 4.2 million people spread out over a mountainous area slightly larger than the entire united kingdom! imagine if overnight the UK just stopped funding the entire concept of transit! no more wheely go-go things. stay home guvs

Apparently Tina Kotek also cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. Nor will she be able to ride a bus and chew gum at the same time once she moves back to Portland after losing re-election in 2026.

she needs to call a special session to pass HB2025 and then a second one just to apologize to all of us

A long long time ago I did all the @commiecompost.bsky.social posts (but on twitter obviously) and had a monthly box there , one of which was dedicated to goopy plants

Mullein is a weed out here
If you’re harvesting the flowers, I’ve found that collecting them in the leaf axils after they’ve fallen off the panicle is much easy than the fiddly work of plucking them out of the flower stalk

I personally love it
I referenced the importance of slime in the second box which showcased bean family herbs.
I daydream about making a slimey mix to get Americans into slime, but that’s a side side hobby , not this one

But the short answer is smoothies and baking , or confections and wheat flour sub if you’re more adventurous
I use a little mesquite in pancakes 🥞 and it’s really great.

I talk about that a little bit in the bean letter.
Something I’m discussing in particular with carob is traditional uses in Europe or North Africa vs the singular use here as a “chocolate substitute”
Similar to my frustrations with tofu in Asian cuisines vs here it’s a “meat substitute”

Keep your eyes out.
I’m going to make a mix of those, the roasted chickpeas from the first box, and green bean chips as a permanent snack thing
It’s the next thing I’m going to do after this box which is my treatise on the importance of snacks

Very interesting, do you know if they’re used like that at all in japan?
I know the mucus is an important part , does it have more or less? (I’d assume less)

Huh I’ve never made my own , is it easier or harder than miso?
I’ve made miso

The current box has amanatto
But I’m looking to the next box which is soybean and I was going to do dried tofu miso soup packets … but the same distributor source has these too. I like natto but idk if everyone will
