Kind of a shame “Gord” isn’t one of the many exports to make it south of the border

Always nice to meet a fan! I can’t take credit for the email bit - before this I was at Microsoft figuring out the ideal frequency for the “Sign in to OneDrive” prompt (we settled on bi-hourly). I don’t even know what OneDrive does!

I thought I recognized you from the convention. I was the guy from Apple presenting on making sure the iPhone only remembers and autofills your address from 3 moves ago

Leaving “mlb” lowercase but including the periods…a master at work

Yeah, it was either a reference to that proverb or one of the thousands of times the phrase has been used online in recent years. In either case, not really relevant to the point/joke I was making?

Well, the second best time probably would’ve been 9 years and 364 days ago, and so on…

“The ‘Southern Charm’ star said on ‘Watch What Happens Live.’” Huh, somehow I’ve missed both of those…pieces of media?

The 2nd real estate listing I looked at in my area just now includes the phrase “master bedroom.” Outside of being an insane thing to care about, I guarantee most Americans right now still don’t know there’s any issue with it.

(doing the mental math): “wow, that’s over 10mph for 12 hours!” before realizing I have absolutely no idea if that’s fast/slow/impossible for a handcar

Unnecessarily complicated, maddeningly deferential to a dangerous autocrat, and delivered with the monotone gusto of an elderly history teacher 2 weeks from retirement? Yep, that’s Democrat messaging. Nailed it.

Maybe these will be seen as too poisonous, either by researchers in the first place, or by the universities employing them, but I’m pretty skeptical of the latter, at least.

Individual members are generally ethical, but there is a huge incentive (financial and otherwise) for the schools themselves to have and maintain faculty that bring in big federal grants.

I’ll just say that this has not at all been my experience working in HSR compliance at 2 universities over the last several years.

To require IRB approval, sure. There’s tons of social/behavioral research that goes through IRB review. But it only requires registration as a clinical trial if it includes subjects being prospectively assigned to an intervention.

I’m totally with you on the ethics of it, but it will take A LOT of pressure for IRBs to start rejecting protocols from established PIs with federal funding

I don’t think that’s necessarily true. I imagine a lot of research on “regret” is not going to meet the definition of a clinical trial, and AFAIK doesn’t have to be registered there. I think you could search for specific grants on the NIH site though?

But why would you immediately be doubtful that painful food causes endorphins to be released? That’s literally the purpose of endorphins, they’re hormones released to relieve pain

It’s not bad, but I wish they had used practical effects instead. There’s just a certain essence missing.

I don’t think this approaches “Randolph” to “Randy,” but “Henry” to “Hank” makes the podium. Imagine salt of the earth propane (and propane accessories) salesman Henry Hill.

I don’t like Zverev or find him particularly fun to watch, but he’s got a decent case. Ranked #2 multiple times, 20+ titles, 3 GS finals. At least on resume, who is better? Maybe Nalbandian?

This was fairly common among my family (vaguely Polish somewhere in our ancestry) and friends when I was a kid in Buffalo (large Polish population). One of those things you don’t understand is bizarre/offensive until you’re removed from it.

The round of IVF alone would be several times that here in the U.S. But at least we also have higher maternal mortality rates!

You’d think that would be like out in the middle of nowhere on some back road, but it’s on the main highway going through the area. You can be driving 60mph and look over and see goats standing on a roof.
