Heyyy!! #MarineResearchers!!! Our new @azti.bsky.social summer school is here, on #AI and #citizenscience to monitor the #ocean and #biodiversity, with 6 Horizon EU projects #GES4SEAS #Obama-Next @guardias.bsky.social etc. RT #MarineEcology Info and registration here www.azti.es/en/event/sum...

Looking forward to our session this afternoon, interacting with important projects such as #GES4SEAS, #LIFE-PROMETHEUS, #LIFE-RELIONMED, #LIFE-DUNIAS, #ClimateInvasives, #B-cubed, #LIFE-RIPARIAS #GuardiasOnestopKickoff

Check our new paper reporting that Mediterranean seagrasses provide essential coastal protection under climate change. Bottom line: Seagrass loss may double the risk of coastal flooding with rising sea levels. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

🌊 The Baltic Sea - balancing pressures in a changing ecosystem We have published an updated Ecosystem Overview highlighting the pressures impacting this ecosystem. 📄 doi.org/10.17895/ice... ℹWe talk to Carolyn Faithfull & Riikka Puntila-Dodd who led this work www.ices.dk/news-and-eve...

Ocean faces multiple threats, such as human activities and #climatechange, managing these is complex, as a Rubik cube. However, using scientific knowledge it can be tackled. See our fantastic #GES4SEAS video #MarineEcology youtu.be/E7qFN2AxIdY?...

Just published: 🦀 Quick Guide to Coral Crabs! w @OsenbergLab in @CurrentBiology Take a crabtastic voyage into the fascinating world of Trapezia. Learn about their unique biology, habitat, and vital role in coral ecosystems. #MarineBiology www.cell.com/current-biol...

We often focus on global surface temperatures as a key metric for climate change. But as we note in the Climate Trends chapter of the new US 5th National Climate Assessment, we see incontrovertible evidence for climate change across the oceans, land, cryosphere, and atmosphere:

Today we publish a new paper on a molecular phylogeny of true crabs. We find crabs transitioned from marine to non-marine environments 7-17x over 100+ myr! This culminates 15+ years(!) of effort from an international team! 1/4 (thread in replies) academic.oup.com/sysbio/advan... 🧪🦀🦑#evosky

Do you generate or analyse biodiversity #genomics data 🧪🧬🖥️? If so, our paper ‘Journeying towards best practice data management in biodiversity genomics’ is for you. tinyurl.com/data-mgmt  #evobio #MolBio 1/5

Chapter 2 of the IPBES report on #IAS is now fully published and available at zenodo.org/records/1005.... Go have a look and download it! It is a comprehensive review of the global status and trends of IAS 🌎 Incredibly happy to have contributed to this fantastic and timely report.

A good overview (in Swedish) on the risks involved with allowing a continued high fishing pressure on weak herring stocks in the Baltic. The EU Council of Ministers neglected the suggestion for drastic decreases in quotas by the Commission.

Bluesky Nature Feeds! Inspired by @markrubin.bsky.social, a list of nearly 50 nature-related feeds & how to post to them! Everything from birds to geoscience to bug sex! Quick feed primer & feed building guides on additional tabs for fun! PLZ lmk if I’ve left any off or something is incorrect 😊

I'm looking to hire a postdoc in coral genomics - $66k/yr plus benefits - follow link for more info - review of apps begins Nov 10 usccareers.usc.edu/job/los-ange...

The damages caused by chemicals and pollution are staggering. Immediate action is urgently needed. 1) stricter regulations 2) transparency and reporting on chemicals use 3) decrease exposure of human and the environment svd.vgc.no/v2/images/a2... www.svd.se/a/3EG6eP/for...

More crab evolution myth busting even though I got ratioed on my own research last time. 🧪🦀 Carcinization is not inevitable! Crab bodies have been LOST multiple times going back to elongated forms! Best illustrated by triangles in this figure by my colleague Javier Luque (paper link in next post)

New PhD opportunity studying cryptobenthic reef fishes, funded through the INSPIRE DTP @unisouthampton with cosupervision at @NHM_London - looking for an excellent student to work on the distribution and functions of the tiniest fish in the sea! findaphd.com/phds/project...

I am looking for a graduate student and a postdoc to join my group! We are a computational group working on understanding evolution in natural populations with a large emphasis on the microbiome. Please get in touch by dm or email! garud.eeb.ucla.edu

Breaking News! Breaking News! Breaking News! Yesterday the global sea surface temperature anomaly hit a new record high of 0.702°C above the 1991-2020 mean, beating the previous record anomaly of 0.700°C set on September 9th. This is a 'Code UFB' event.

One wonders how successful a species like this can be controlled. 🦑🧪🌎 www.theguardian.com/environment/...

First PCR in the shiny new labs in Natrium, MSc student Mimmi is going to sequence DNA from deep-sea bivalves (CCZ, around 4000 m depth).

Did you think hermit crabs always live in snail shells? 🧪🦀 Some deep sea hermit species live symbiotically with anemones that DISSOLVE the shell and SECRETE a new one ("carcinoecium") made of chitin! The carcinoecium has evolved at least 3 times! Photo credits in alt text. @megdaly.bsky.social

We are announcing a PhD position in the Swedish research project VEKTOR. Please spread the word. 👇

Today GMBL helped Gothenburg Natural History Museum to sample a 6.7 m dead male orca that stranded during the weekend at Killingsholmen south of Gothenburg. Samples will be sent to SVA and the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. #MarineLife

Absolute 🔥 this. 'It has been recently suggested that universities, as they currently exist, are not fit for purpose in a time of planetary emergency, and there is a desperate need to develop alternative approaches.' 'There is no research on a dead planet.' www.frontiersin.org/articles/10....

Just hit 8035 code sent! Thank you all so much for donating codes and spreading the word to get more researchers and clinicians here. There are ~850 codes left to distribute, and I just cleared the request list. If you know anyone looking to join bsky, send them my way! 🧪 forms.gle/ZyYhpa5MHT66...

There is increasing evidence that the world has warmed faster over the past 15 years than it has since the 1970s. Surface records, ocean heat content, and the Earth's energy imbalance all support an acceleration of warming, as I argue in today's @nytimes.com: www.nytimes.com/2023/10/13/o...
