One thing I am seeing misreported in the media today about the Skrmetti ruling is a claim that the supreme court ruled this is "about age, not transgender status." SCOTUS also ruled this is about "diagnosis, not transgender status" Bans targeting adults are likely legal under this ruling.

One bright spot for trans people in Montana: Today's SCOTUS decision does not touch Montana. That's because Montana overturned its gender affirming care ban through the state Supreme Court. States are allowed to have protections that go beyond the US constitution, and thus that ruling is unaffected.

America's rich history of overconfident white men blithely leading the country into extended, horrific, bloody disasters seems to have done absolutely nothing to dissuade the latest generation of overconfident white men.

He's in far worse shape cognitively now, but his mental illness is still going strong. He's less inhibited than ever before, and much more likely to do something catastrophic. A terrible outlook.

I still remember this shit. Insanely irritating.

How much of Anglo-American transphobia and rightward shifting of the Overton Window is downstream of the ruralist, agriculture-centric bias of FPTP, single-winner elections between the UK and North America?

something i genuinely suspect is that among blue labour types and natcons, it serves as a "culture war against the metros" issue and by owning the trans community, you can show white working class voters that you're just like them when it comes your hatred of the Other

the thing is that you do not even need to conclude that "transgender" is a valid category in order to conclude that it is sex-based discrimination not to allow men, in this reading, to get breast implants

California cannot be a refuge for people fleeing repression when an apartment costs three thousand dollars a month.

Every time I hear some California "progressive" saying we can't build housing because of some irrational, imaginary concern without any empirical basis, I think about my friends in New Orleans who are stuck under both Trump's thumb and Jeff Landry's thumb with no way out.

No LGB without the T. All LGBTQ people are less free today. Don’t divide us and let’s not allow ourselves to be divided.

A better New York newspaper response to the NYC primary

I keep being dismayed by efforts to divide LGBTQ people by putting them against each other—I’ve heard it from straight and some gay people. Just re-upping this sentiment today especially.

The court allowing right-wing states to ban medicine for trans kids is a huge step back, and also concerning as Republicans are also going after vaccines. In California, we stand strong for trans rights. We've got work to do to help those coming here to seek healthcare, or move here permanently. 🏳️‍⚧️✊

NEW at Bolts: Native groups face a triple voting rights threat: judges targeting the VRA, federal officials hostile to enforcing it, and a funding crunch depleting their work. Pascal Sabino reports that these all just came together in North Dakota. boltsmag.org/voting-right...

The decision in Skrmetti lets politicians create their own evidence to justify banning necessary healthcare. It's bad, writes @evanurquhart.bsky.social. Not just for trans people, but for anyone whose healthcare is or could potentially be politically contested. Read more here:

You see the same media tactics used over and over to sow doubt about trans healthcare, climate change, high speed rail. Once you see it you can't unsee it, and I implore newshound liberals to be more skeptical of these tactics.

The repression of trans people is not, by and large, a grassroots outpouring of hatred from the American people. It's something that's been carefully planted and tended over years by a handful of media people and their pet reporters.

This should be interesting: kyivindependent.com/ukraines-new...

As a DNC member, the one thing I wish more activists understood is that the problem isn't "the DNC" or "donors", both of which are much more progressive than the party's public stances. The problem is Schumer, Jeffries and a handful of wealthy consultants misreading their own polls.

While California might be more prominent in the discourse, New England NIMBYism truly hits different.

Maciek Jasik, the photographer who took this photo, wasn’t told much about the context it would be used in Mina Brewer, the model, disavowed their participation in the shoot immediately after reading the article

thinking again about this 2018 cover

It's wild the number of people willing to embrace the world's worst people when it's convenient for their particular narrative. Tucker Carlson is a far-right propagandist and conspiracy theorist. If he says anything sensible, it's almost certainly for the wrong reasons. Don't loan him credibility.

Yesterday’s Dem primary for Lt. Gov. of Virginia was won w/ just 27% of the vote – and 2 other candidates finished within 1 point. In crowded primaries, #RankedChoiceVoting can deliver majority winners & unite a party behind its strongest candidate. @upvoteva.bsky.social

Once again, the best thing to do to protect gender-affirming care at this time is to protect it in state constitutions. If we are inserting abortion and marriage equality protections in the name of bodily autonomy, gender-affirming care upon consent should be protected in the same way as well.

this is good messaging

I'm calling for a total and complete shutdown on "kitchen-table issues" and "attempt to divert attention"

The federal government imposing a stop work order on Trevor project for the national 988 suicide hotline on the same day that the Supreme Court greenlit a ban on care despite the risk of suicide sends a clear message: The United States government officially wants trans youth to kill themselves.

Reactions from the ACLU on Skrmetti, line with my thinking: The decision is a little more limited and leaves many rulings against anti-transgender laws in tact. However, it also creates huge loopholes to target transgender people, and the medical care ban will cause horror.

But it's okay, the podcasters assured me there was CIA Jew Bildeberg Group Regime Change in USAID so actually this is fine

Internet leftists: Harris lost because she met with Liz Cheney like twice Me:

The fact that our highest economic growth in the 2010-2022 period was in metropolitan areas with severe growth restrictions has kneecapped housing supply growth for a generation.

This is actually the second decision from the Roberts court endorsing plessy-like reasoning. The first was Dobbs. bsky.app/profile/jame...

The idea that government discrimination against trans ppl needs only survive rational basis review is basically an invitation to red state governments to do whatever crazy tyranny they want to trans ppl, and will have negative effects that stretch far beyond this one case.

The word games that judges play.

My very, very first impression of Skrmetti is that it is as horrible as people are saying, and yet, it is a more limited horror: It does not overturn bostock, it doesn't overturn rulings saying trans discrimination = sex discrimination. Bathroom, sports, passport ruling are good under this.
