and imo it's not really a matter of "improving" grounds. when you write characters as people, it's easy to explore the uncontrollable/unexplainable between behaviors.

and for this, he gets involved in studying the primal data left in werlyt with regula's aether. he has an awkward, dissonant familial relationship with unukalhai, who visited the site in adjacent interests. though he's got too much on his plate to try & help the boy, hence the void quests turnout.

i'd also like to believe regula made effort to explore the populares before finalizing his research with the warring triad. his remaining squadron was able to deliver the reports to the organization & maxima, of all members, personally takes it upon himself to advocate the research.

at some point, he doesn't know if he's actually in love with thancred or wol. he just knows theyre drives that push and pull at his impulses. he's a bit more sadistic in this nature, but is still incredibly giving for the people.

the exarch has a bit of a larger ego in tact bc he still sees wol as competition from the tower exploration days. he sours wol's relationships and especially gets his hands under thancred's skin. he still wants for humanity's survival. but he likes one-upping wol in the martyr division.

since his swim in the sea of souls, he understands the guilt in living. but he persists anyway. because like 8 annoying comrades refuse to let him simmer in despair. but he also feels immense chaos for falling in love with the hero that will outlive him.
