I think there is something in that.

It might take a visible crisis - a sort of "Cuban missile crisis" in Europe (not like that but mutatis mutandis) for the government to just start taking the fiscal measures it needs to take and people will accept it because nobody has a better idea.

True. But it is also true that Putin is not going to go out of his way to accommodate the UK government's economic and political problems. If the Trump Presidency offers Putin a chance to test NATO's nerve he might be tempted, even is his armed forces have taken a battering from Ukraine.

That is certainly true. But a potentially good outcome of the SDR is to make more people aware that Putin's ambitions in Europe are not just TV background stuff but actually have the potential to change our lives for the worse.

Must add I only meant "could match France" very loosely. France can deliver nukes via air-launched supersonic missiles which is streets ahead of gravity bombs. A complication is that France rejects tactical nuke doctrine in favour of the "warning-shot followed by all hell breaks loose" approach.

The UK should buy fighter jets. But not from the US.
The US is no longer a reliable ally to the UK or anybody else.

The planes would carry B61 gravity bombs from the US stockpile and this would be part of NATO nuclear-sharing arrangements. I agree that European planes and UK warheads would be better because independent of the US.
