"According to @bobbyduffy.bsky.social, an expert on generational differences, [the debate about young people at work] has been helped by a 'massively changed information environment', which enables us to share 'compelling individual case studies – of people having a breakdown about their 9-5 job'"

"4 in 10 of us back in the 1940s said we struggled to get out of bed every day and 4 in 10 of us today say exactly the same" @bobbyduffy.bsky.social on Times Radio, on our new research reissuing old survey questions about everyday life, work and education in the UK ➡️ www.kcl.ac.uk/news/homewor...

"[in 1947] a quarter of men said they never helped with the housework and now just 4% of men today admit to that" @bobbyduffy.bsky.social on Times Radio, on our new research reissuing old survey questions about everyday life, work and education in the UK ➡️ www.kcl.ac.uk/news/homewor...

This is obviously good, but the question phrasing shows we’ve got a way to go: Men ‘help’ with housework. Women just do it. Because it’s still our job & men still get to just help with it. Or not.

New study on long-term trends: we're only slightly more likely to say we'd like to settle in another country today than in 1948 - though fewer definitely against it. More interesting is the notably higher figure for Reform voters - 60% would like to move abroad www.kcl.ac.uk/news/homewor...

New study on very long trends: some things haven't changed since 1947 - 4 in 10 struggled to get up in the morning back then, exactly same as now. I feel vindicated that this seems to be just a constant human trait - BUT... www.kcl.ac.uk/news/homewor... @rentouljohn.bsky.social

New study looking at very long trends: nearly 4 in 10 women said they would rather be a man in 1947, down to 9% today, though that's still twice as high as proportion of men who would rather be a woman... www.kcl.ac.uk/news/homewor... @giwlkings.bsky.social @policyatkings.bsky.social

5 years ago this week we released our first major study on Covid and lockdown attitudes/behaviours. Understandably, we hadn't fully grasped how serious it would be - for example, the modal guess was we'd see up to 20k deaths, when excess deaths ended up 200k+... www.kcl.ac.uk/news/life-un...

Looking forward to this one - @bobbyduffy.bsky.social always gives a fascinating interview (I spoke to him for my piece about Xennials a while ago - will post that below)

@bobbyduffy.bsky.social is brilliant - give this a listen!

"They were lucky – they did live through better economic times and better policy decisions for them – but it wasn't a deliberate act by a whole generation." @bobbyduffy.bsky.social was on The Bunker podcast to discuss stereotypes and misconceptions about Baby Boomers ⬇️

What do the public think is driving the increase in mental ill health among young people? Given all focus on phones/ social media, might think that would dominate - but the public don't see one simple cause, in Canada, UK or Australia - a real mix here... @policyatkings.bsky.social @orygen.org.au

6 in 10 Canadians think cost of living is a key driver of rise in youth mental ill health, much higher than 4 in 10 in UK and Australia. New study with @ipsoscanada.bsky.social released at International Youth Mental Health conference in Vancouver with @orygen.org.au

The Times series comparing views of young people in 2004 and 2024 is very good - better than lots of snapshot surveys on Gen Z, as shows real change. But it's still only part of the picture - take this collapse in pride in Britain, which saw a lot of discussion... @policyatkings.bsky.social

Our new study with Ipsos finds Canadians are far more likely than their peers in the UK & Australia to say the cost of living is driving a rise in reported youth mental health problems. “Covid definitely will be seen as part of the [forces] defining now and into the future, but only a part...Not to the extent that you would think a global pandemic that upended our life for two years would.” @bobbyduffy.bsky.social spoke to the Guardian about how the pandemic changed Britain

Only 6% of Gen Z actually support dictatorship. So why did the media tell us it was 52%? Our research exposes the misleading narratives around young people and democracy, write Prof Bobby Duffy and Dr Paolo Morini.

Gen Z doesn’t want dictators. They want functioning democracy. A recent poll was widely misinterpreted, fueling unnecessary generational panic. Our research tells a very different story, write @bobbyduffy.bsky.social & @pmorini.bsky.social . From @uk.theconversation.com -- thanks!

Slightly late to this but, if you want to see how good social science research can contextualise & rebut a dubious headline, then check out this excellent report and thread from the Kings Policy institute, showing contra Channel 4's alarmist headlines that, no, young ppl don't want a dictatorship

Join us on 28 May for @mlclem.bsky.social's book launch - 'The Art of Delivery: The Inside Story of How the Blair Government Transformed Britain's Public Services' Dr Clement will be in conversation with Sir Michael Barber. Tickets: thestrandgroup.kcl.ac.uk/event/book-l...

The claim that over half of Gen Z Brits want a UK dictatorship, based on a Channel 4 study, would be alarming if true. However, doubts exist about whether this reflects Gen Z's real views, according to KCL's Policy Institute director Bobby Duffy. ⬇️ https://bit.ly/3QAJW7C

At a geeky level, it's interesting how much difference just bolding/capitalising the second part of statement makes - we were taught (@benpageresearch.bsky.social) to avoid "double-barrelled" qs partly for this reason - many people satisfice and only read/properly consider first part

Good stuff in response to the Channel 4 Gen Z poll 👇

It is tragic that the media are promoting irresponsible and misconceived messages in today's rather unstable political landscape. The article below rightly highlights that "there is a risk that attention-grabbing discussion encourages a sense among gen Z that supporting dictatorship is the norm."

That's a very polite tweet! Actually what @bobbyduffy.bsky.social helpfully spells out is that this was a totally misleading claim and we need to cut it out. Seriously. Stop asking badly worded questions, not testing impact of alternative wordings & making wild claims for clicks.

This is a really excellent investigation into the claim that around half of Gen Z want a dictator. It makes a compelling case that the combination of inattentive respondents and question wording inflates apparent support for non-democracy considerably - small tweaks lead to much smaller numbers.

There's no way "over half of Gen Z want a dictator" - our new study gets more like 6% This is vital to get right - we're sowing generational division, giving fake momentum to the sense that young people are rejecting democracy + missing the real message theconversation.com/only-6-of-ge...

Widespread media coverage about a recent study suggested over half of Gen Z want the UK to be run by a dictator. But our research suggests it's more like only 6% who hold this view in reality. @bobbyduffy.bsky.social & @pmorini.bsky.social explain why this matters for @uk.theconversation.com ⬇️ 🧵
