In England it was thought that if you brought dandelions into the house it would make you wet the bed. There may be a grain of truth in this as dandelions are a diuretic and in French dandelions are commonly known as 'Le pissenlit' (wet the bed). #FolkloreThursday

Want to know if you'll marry well? Sneak into a cabbage field at night and pull one up. If the roots carry lots of soil then you'll marry a rich person. #FolkloreThursday For more food folklore buy my book A Feast of Folklore here: uk.bookshop.org/p/books/a-fe...

#FolkloreThursday In Czech folk tradition, it's believed that the herbs collected during Midsummer Night have magical powers. They heal, protect, and they can also spark love. Each region has their nine favourite herbs for this time, but St. John's wort is popular everywhere.

My research into Nanny Morgan has been one of the most fulfilling things I've ever done. Ann Morgan's story highlights the importance of honouring historical legacies in folkloric narratives. She deserves to be remembered. nearlyknowledgeablehistory.blogspot.com/2022/08/nann... #Folklore #Witches

"Hares are frequently said to be transformed witches, and one of these animals used to stop waggons at Bishops Waltham, opposite the Toll House, when it disappeared down the drains or pipes of the House." From "It Happened In Hampshire" Beddington & Christy 1937. #FolkloreThursday #Witch #Hare

When Elizabeth Blackwell created The Curious Herbal in 1737 the witch trials had only just ended, but folk in Britain were still wary of tomatoes believing witches used them to turn foe into lycanthropes~also probably because tomatoes are in the Atropa (belladonna) family #folklorethursday 🍅🐺

Thank you all SO much for a brilliant #FolkloreThursday hour looking at witches in folklore~fairytale~superstition✨This is @botanicafabula.bsky.social off to feed tomatoes to her enemies in the hope they turn into werewolves😇+passing the grimoire to @mythcrafts.bsky.social to guard for the next hour

Hello #FolkloreThursday and thank you to @botanicafabula.bsky.social for hosting the last session! This is @mythcrafts.bsky.social for the next hour of witchy wonderment. Img: The Witch by Albrecht Dürer

30 people were arrested during Newcastle's Witch Trial in 1649, with 14 women and 1 man later hanged on the Town Moor on 21 August 1650. One accused woman was released because the authorities believed she was too pretty to fit the witch stereotype #FolkloreThursday [image by Andrew Tryon]

In 1616 Elspeth Roach was accused of collecting Yarrow in a ritualised manner…amongst other things. Whilst divining with Yarrow stalks may not be wholly reliable it is great for helping with cold symptoms💚🌿💫 something I explore in The Time Traveller’s Herbal #FolkloreThursday 🤗

What a magical hour of witchy lore hosted by the fabulous @willowwinsham.bsky.social #FolkloreThursday 🍄 This is @botanicafabula.bsky.social in from braiding her daughter's hair+releasing her from the tower to go to school 😂 stepping in to guest host for the next hour Pic:Rapunzel 1920 Kay Nielsen

What a great morning! @willowwinsham.bsky.social flying away now, but @botanicafabula.bsky.social will be taking over for more witches in folklore, fairy tales and superstition! 🎨Katie Ponder, from The Story of Witches by @willowwinsham.bsky.social #FolkloreThursday

#OTD 1662, Rose Cullender and Amy Denny of Lowestoft, Suffolk, were executed as witches after a three day trial in which local families gave evidence accusing the two women of bewitching their children and tormenting them in spectral form. #FolkloreThursday

So excited to showcase some of the fabulous illustrations from The Story of Witches today! First up, Baba Yaga, the iconic witch from Slavic fairy tales. She lives deep in the forest in her hut on chicken-leg stilts, surrounded by a skull-topped fence. 🎨 Katie Ponder #FolkloreThursday

Iron was seen as a popular deterrent to witches. a 20th century belief recorded from the Isle of Man stated that if a stranger visited, metal tongs should be laid across a baby's cradle, just in case they were a witch. Image: Berthe Morisot, The Cradle, 1872. #FolkloreThursday

Maggie Wall burnt here 1657~a trip yesterday to Dunning and the witches monument~some believe it is actually a C19th cenotaph to those accused of witchcraft+Maggie is a composite character~or maybe the real story was too harrowing and so romanticised during the fairy tale days… #folklorethursday
