The same principles that build a successful business: testing, metrics, early adopters, VOC, scalable distribution...also build a sustainable creative career.
Stop treating ur film as a stepping stone to HW and start treating it like the business model of the future.

Instead of finishing your film, then asking “Who will buy this?”, take time at the beginning to ask:
➡️ “Who is my audience?”
➡️ “What value am I creating?”
➡️ “How do I fund, launch, and scale this story?”
➡️ “What can I do now to help increase the likelihood of success?”

It's a high-risk, high-reward product launch which needs u to pay as much attention to determining your product-market fit, branding, customer acquisition strategy, and building a well researched/ defensible sales funnel, as to the film itself.
The difference is mindset.

Too often, filmmakers view their films as passion projects.
Confident in the belief that all they have to do is make a great film, and a career will come calling.
But in reality? Every independent film is a business venture.

If we apply startup thinking to film and embrace lean models, MVPs, niche audiences, value stacking, etc. then we can stop waiting for permission and start building sustainable careers on our own terms.
Reinvention isn’t rebellion. It’s just good business.

We need to stop thinking like artists begging for a greenlight and start thinking like founders building a company. Because that's what we are.
A film isn’t just a story.
It’s a product.
A brand.
A revenue stream.

With access to affordable high-quality cameras and editing software, along with crowdfunding platforms and options for direct-to-audience distribution...we have the tools.
What indie filmmakers often don't have is an entrepreneurial mindset.

Independent film needs to pivot. It can't just be about “breaking in" any more. It needs to be about breaking out.

I'm honestly not against the concept - it was the idea that it's just 3 people that got me thinking.

It's a great organization, and it's in support of women and non-binary writers/directors, so a wonderful cause as well.
But that budget is just flooring me.
