The next decade will be difficult for #nature #conservation. In a new editorial in @oryxthejournal.bsky.social, we suggest a range of things we can do to rebuild support and challenge #post-truth politics. Led by Nigel Dudley, the piece reminds us that we must not abandon hope. go.shr.lc/3YM3J8I

Gosh, I miss reality. [Attorney General] Bondi went on to claim that Trump’s efforts to crack down on fentanyl had already saved—“are you ready for this, media? 258 million lives.” There are roughly 340 million people in America. - from The Bulwark www.science.org/content/arti...

Judge Wilkinson's order is a fresh & firm reminder of how and why separation of powers should work. This (Republican) judge is highly respected by the "conservative" SCOTUS majority. 6 pages, double-spaced. Read it for yourself "while there is still time." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Americans filled the streets yesterday in protests across the country. @nytimes.com, how was this not front page news in the print edition, and not at all in the web edition? NB: The protests were nonviolent.

Happy to share our new @thelancet.bsky.social comment exploring the challenges and opportunities for prevention and #OneHealth in the WHO #PandemicAgreement, including solutions grounded in the text to overcome outstanding gaps in the final stages of the negotiations. bit.ly/3E7RKeu

This new publication unpacks and addresses the most common misconceptions about OECMs (Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures). OECMs are not a shortcut to meeting conservation targets—they are powerful tools only when applied correctly and intentionally. www.nature.com/articles/s44...

The White House X account features top officials with firearms & captive prisoners. @theatlantic.com shows class by not including and thereby amplifying the images, but the look is a long way from the picture Ronald Reagan painted of a shining city on a hill. www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

I am interested in participating, but worry about: a) it being used as a pretext to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 and b) potential violence by self-styled "militias," either as infiltrators or directly attacking peaceful protestors. The two are concerns are related. app.sosha.ai/s/6oSqEfto

American war planning usually takes place in highly secure facilities. But the Trump administration planned its strikes on the Houthis using a group chat—and accidentally included The Atlantic’s editor in chief, Jeffrey Goldberg. theatln.tc/IuULQFiY

A good explanation of what it means to be a “conservative.” Republicans today are not acting as conservatives—that is, conserving what works—but instead are following a radical ideology. March 12, 2025 open.substack.com/pub/heatherc...

Happy Solstice. It is a comfort being reminded that—no matter what foolish things people and politicians may do—the Earth still tracks true around its star.

🆕 New Technical Guide! “Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures” are one of two classifications (with protected areas) of in-situ conservation sites defined by the UN as eligible towards the #30x30 #biodiversity target. Both should have positive conservation outcomes—OECMs by definition. 🧵

Pleased to have spent a week in Germany (Vilm Island) helping UNESCO consider synergies between World Heritage and the #biodiversity #GBF, with colleagues old and new. Even if I had to miss Thanksgiving with family. ☹️
