Very powerful, thanks to you both. While tempted to print one on a T shirt for Saturday's march, it is very important that protests be nonviolent, lest they be used as a pretext for the Insurrection Act. The bras d'honneur is pretty aggressive. I expect self-styled "militias" & we must de-escalate.

A piece dated yesterday by @jonathanhaidt.bsky.social in @theatlantic.com appears to cite some of the same studies. (Of course, I just spent a good deal of screen time tracking it down!) www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...

Thanks for trying but, for future reference, the link requires a first-month-is-free subscription. (At least for me.) I’ll search for the source study. And thanks for your insightful posts here on Bluesky.

This looks interesting but the newspaper is behind a firewall. Might you have a citation for the research

Not sure why you can’t access a gift article. It is a good piece, but I don’t have another (legal) way to transmit it to you. The Atlantic is well worth a subscription.

I would repeat to Peter and his family what hundreds of people said to me last week, "I'm sorry for your loss." I am also sorry for our collective loss of reason.

"There are no checks and balances in a world where only charisma matters, no rule of law in a world where emotion defeats reason—only a void that anyone with a shocking and compelling story can fill." 🔚

"By contrast, this rising international elite is creating something very different: a society in which superstition defeats reason and logic, transparency vanishes, and the nefarious actions of political leaders are obscured behind a cloud of nonsense and distraction. 🧵

"...governance prospers in sunlight; and that the political order inheres in rules and laws and processes, not mystical charisma. The supporters of the New Obscurantism have also broken with the ideals of America’s Founders, all of whom considered themselves to be men of the Enlightenment.🧵

The #30x30 target of the #GBF aims to conserve 30% of the surface of the Earth—land, inland waters, coast and ocean—by 2030. For more, see our Guide to Inclusive, Equitable and Effective Implementation of Target 3 on web toolkit, 30x30.solutions 🔚

Congratulations to the primary authors of this IUCN WCPA Good Practice Guide: Harry Jonas, Stephen Woodley and Pete Wood. They are not (yet) on Bluesky so I am posting for them. The work had hundreds of contributors, and was championed by the late Dr. Kathy Mackinnon. 🧵

In its Global Biodiversity Framework, the UN Convention on Biological Diversity also recognizes “indigenous and traditional territories,” a term not yet officially defined. Efforts are underway to establish criteria, but above all they too should demonstrate positive conservation outcomes. 🧵

IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas Good Practice Guidance on Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) portals.iucn.org/library/node... 🧵

An #OECM can meet all the criteria of PAs, but only if it is not officially recognized as such. OECMs can be governed & managed by government, private entities, and/or local communities, and for objectives other than conservation. Confused? You’re not alone! New guidance seeks to add clarity. 🧵👇

Thank you for this post. I visited a syrt very like the one in the trailer about a year ago, and this brought back memories. (I was also raised in Illinois, by the way, so thanks for what you do.)

"Ultimately, more land managed for conservation is good and all forms of area-based conservation should be encouraged. However, not all forms of area-based conservation qualify for inclusion in Target 3. Long-term intent and outcomes are fundamental, as outlined in the definitions of PAs and OECMs."

Our new IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA) 𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘦 defines “long-term” for protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures. Our team was led by James Fitzsimons with Sue Stolton, Nigel Dudley and me.
