Or, another thought…we could maybe try diplomacy? You know…like we already did to great success under the JCPOA. I understand that’s hard though. It would require standing up to Bibi and Israel, which neither political party has shown much appetite for.

The best thing I’ve read all day said that if constitutional rights only apply to individuals or states that have sued for relief or to protect them, then you don’t have constitutional rights. What you have instead are privileges that can sometimes be secured for you by a lawyer.

I’m certainly not advocating for it. The consequences would be horrific and would set the precedent for southern states to start ignoring all previous rulings on civil rights, etc.
I’m simply wondering aloud.
Regardless, this day is a tragedy for the country.

At what point does the bias of the Supreme Court become so painfully clear that states, executives, or collections of individuals simply stop complying with its orders?
comment in response to

At least the Supreme Court chose to radically expand the power of the executive branch during a period of time when we have a thoughtful, measured, and responsible president.
Imagine how terrible this would be if we had someone notoriously vindictive and temperamental.

Trump has told some tall tales in his day, but can you imagine the fallout from being wrong about a country’s possession of a nuclear weapon?
Pun very much intended.

Man Fox really just be saying the quiet part out loud these days. No fucks given whatsoever.

Exactly. It’s just like how white people as a whole weren’t condemned after Oklahoma City, but after 9/11 Muslims faced (and still face) significant backlash.

I never know what to make of these polls. On the one hand, a clear majority were opposed to the fascistic deployment of force against protesters that were in large part peaceful. On the other hand, that majority is not nearly clear enough. Are the 37% in support still reachable? I have my doubts…

It says a lot about the state of the country when only one candidate of one particular religion is being consistently asked these types of questions.

Yes to masked agents, the end of due process, autocracy and environmental destruction
No to coop groceries, subsidized childcare, and a progressive tax structure.
When will the winning stop!

This administration acts like they’re Obi-Wan with force like mind control abilities.

I feel so sorry for the people of Venice. Their city was among the most unique in all the world. The history and culture of the veneziani is all but lost now as the city has been transformed into a theme park for American tourists.

If I were an NYC voter that was on the fence about whether to support Mamdani or Cuomo before the primary, I imagine I’d feel pretty vindicated in my choice of Mamdani based solely on the reaction to his victory by the billionaire class and political elite.

Can you imagine if Trump was president after D-Day?
“We dropped a tremendous load on them. A load the likes of which the world has never seen. They were running…ahhh…so scared…scared frankly to a level that you wouldn’t believe. They were running to shelters…beautiful. Just beautiful.”

And why stop at bagels? Our bread is shit here too. Ugh…and I wasn’t going to get mad today.

Telling someone from the east coast that the PNW has good bagels is like telling an Italian that they should try this little family owned joint called the Olive Garden.

In the category of least surprising things ever:
What did the President think would happen when he “truthed” for weeks that this was a possibility? If someone told me I was going to be involved in a car crash on a specific road sometime in the next two weeks, I’d take a different route to work.

That the major western powers are more concerned about the optics of criticizing Israel than they are about protecting human rights. These are countries that have all adopted the universal declaration of human rights but have consistently failed to live up to the standards of that document.

I mean absolutely no offense to Slovenia, but it says a lot about the state of the world when they’re the ones leading the charge for human rights on behalf of Gaza.

That’s very unfortunate. Huge missed opportunity for a city that could be a shining model for public transit and other alternatives like bike/ped communities.

I’m so sick of this whole “stand up for the flag” mentality. The military doesn’t own patriotism, and you can love your country without wanting to fight a meaningless war in the Middle East for it. I get sick thinking about how far along we’d be in terms of health, science, and education without war
comment in response to

I am so confused. What reason is there for this? I’ve never visited NYC but I’ve been to many other major cities around the world and have never seen free parking. This is a massive missed opportunity for fees that could pay for public transit.

The GOP has only ever embraced states’ rights when it’s been convenient for them. For state specific climate and environmental policies, policies around women’s health, and policies related to criminal justice, they’re okay with using the power of the federal government to crush dissent. Hypocrisy.
comment in response to

This honestly scares the shit out of me. This administration has a history of believing that if you say a lie enough times it becomes the truth, not to mention what that lie does to encourage some right wing nut job to take matters into his own hands. This is borderline incitement.

Just another billionaire that thinks his money can buy him elections and democracy itself. I love that Mamdani has all of these guys feeling sick to their stomachs this morning. Maybe that’s why I woke up feeling so good today! Schadenfreude for the win.
comment in response to

For months democrats have been reading the stage directions and trying to craft a message around poll numbers. Mamdani came through like a freight train. I live on the west coast but his candidacy sent shockwaves across the country. Hopefully other dems start standing for something.

Much like their professed love of “personal freedom”, their love of “states’ rights” is and has always been grounded in hypocrisy. Yes to unrestricted gun ownership, no to abortion (even when deemed medically necessary). Yes to ending state specific climate policy, no to sanctuary cities or states.

Your comment assumes that Trump remembers what he did last week. An assumption that at this point is dubious at best.

It’s hard not to wonder if the first 156 days of this presidency has irreparably harmed our standing in the world. Tariffs on friends, taking advantage of our allies in their time of greatest need, launching military strikes under the guise of diplomacy. Hard not to wonder when blowback is coming.

It’s remarkable to me that I must present identification when entering my work at the transportation building but these agents can abduct someone off the street without it. I have no sympathy for the concern about being doxxed. Only heroes and villains wear masks, and government agents are neither.

24 years after NYC was attacked by terrorists claiming to act in the name of Islam, NYC voters nominated a Muslim democratic socialist to be their mayor. If that doesn’t give you hope, then I don’t know what will. Congrats Zohran and congrats to the people of NYC! You made the right choice.

Cuomo treated this race like it was beneath him. He wouldn’t do interviews, wouldn’t go to the people, and generally had an attitude that said “you know me already.” Yes, they do know you.
Mamdani went to the people. He talked to everyone who wanted to talk with him. He treated the job as sacred.

I live on the west coast and work for a climate office. I’ve watched as hundreds of millions in funding my office was awarded has been taken away. I’ve had so little hope for months, but this race gave me so much hope and inspiration. A little human decency goes a long way these days.

The most stunning thing about this is that it’s stunning at all. Cuomo was propped up by big money donors who shamelessly looked past his history of sexual misconduct and other transgressions. Mamdani should’ve had the support of the party from the beginning. Congrats to all of NYC. It’s a new day.
