Every interview with one of these tech ghouls like Thiel is like "So you figured out a slightly better way to move numbers from one computer to the other: now, tell me, who should live and who should die?"

Worth a watch: Head of Signal, Meredith Whittaker, on so-called "agentic AI" and the difference between how it's described in the marketing and what access and control it would actually require to work as advertised.

This is a beautiful piece. I'm in tears

Along with Harry Dean Stanton, and, incomparably, Julee Cruise, her voice made you feel what David Lynch somehow saw. Had other music that was very cool as well, and worth a listen. So glad I got to see her at a showing of Mullholland Drive at the Music Box in 2021. RIP.

I loved this article

It will never stop being incomprehensibly insane that serious questions about Iranian enriched uranium capabilities are being asked to Donald Trump.

I know it's pointless, but no one is saying that the bombs, like, missed. It's pathetic and maddening how transparent they're being, hiding behind our Great American Pilots.

FLOATING INTO THE NIGHT could probably be my vote all the way to the end.

This is murderous criminality on a historic scale. It isn't as dramatic and visceral as Gaza, but is just as real.

There really is something special about what Zohran and Brad are showing the rest of the world what it still means to be a New Yorker and an American. A Jew and a Muslim modeling a politics of mutual respect, rejecting cynicism. Human decency has been taking a beating but she's not out just yet!

"Do RADICAL LEFT DEMOCRATS support 'Muslim' Madmani? Went against Bill Clinton! You should find this bad, for some reason!"

Perhaps New Yorkers have forgotten 9/11, unlike me, a right-wing influencer who hates New York and everything it stands for.

Over at @necessaryfiction.com today we've shared some suggestions for your summer reading.

Have not seen a "ceasefire plan" other than him saying "cease fire forever." But his plan, as ever, is saying something and hoping that enough people will believe it is true and telling reality to pound sand.

Really great thread on the reality of the situation and why it is probably even worse than the idea that they are "merely" diverting disaster aid for this sweltering gulag.

This is bad on a civilian-military relationship basis, but I also hate "penchant for social media" when "absolute lack of impulse control" and "reckless aggrandizement" are both factual descriptors.

I love that he says he's going to fix all human knowledge the day after his spaceship spontaneously combusted.

Assisted dying is an issue I have been for, both instinctively and intellectually, but have changed my mind on due to arguments presented here.

To the extent this is true it is that Trump promised that whatever he did -- taking down the cartels, reining in Iran -- would be so easy, because he's Trump. But to hear that as not being hawkish is wishcasting and projection.

It's obviously a lie, but I am also super annoyed by "safing."

So Starship Ship 36 just detonated *before* the static fire test - fueled and waiting for the test. Looks like the top tank lets go and sets off the whole stack. It would be bad enough if it let go during the static fire test, but it just blew up. And it's cooking off the fuel tanks on the pad.

I get, from his point of view, why doing this is fun or whatever. His earnest-seeming bullshit, the trolling, etc. But imagine being the Vice President when the admin is deciding whether to go to war (or whatever passes for decision-making), and admitting "this is all I have going on today!"

Anyone saying the assault on trans people is a distraction neither cares about the meaning of fascism nor values human life. And even if it *was* a "distraction -- an attempt to gin up the culture war to hide the parts of their agenda that hurt everyone -- so what? These are still real people!

Popping in here quickly to say that the courts do not have first or final say. Ever. Trans people [of all ages] deserve every single thing that everyone else does. The illegitimate court is illegitimate.

Even more than that -- Iraq was in their crosshairs from the 2000 campaign, derailed briefly by Afghanistan, but the conversation started in early 2002. People had long debates, there were 1000s of articles outside of newsroom bloviating. This is just "Oh, I guess we're gonna do it, great!"

I know everyone knows this, but this is ICE. Immigration cops! Not soldiers! This isn't normal! It's insane!

I think a lot of people around Trump know he's a dumb chump, but I'm not sure Huckabee does. I think he's blinded by his idiot apocalyptic faith. This also could just be manipulation, but either way, one of the most dangerous things ever sent.

I remember toward the end of 2008 Dick Cheney personally intervening in California laws that regulated boat speed in crucial whale habitats. For private boats, there wasn't even a commerce argument. Just "I need to do one more evil thing before it's too late!"
