I've heard a few conservatives joke about making students & convicts go pick crops during harvest. Their jokes usually end up becoming policy. Considering how the GOP is incredibly nihilist, and seems on the verge of declaring "Year Zero", I wouldn't be surprised.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey wasn't a perfect game but it's one that really stuck with me. If I was a billionaire, I would pay Ubisoft a few million to put a couple of Aristophanes comedies in the game. Fully voice acted in Greek and English. With chorus, costumes. Everything.

In his invasion of Pennsylvania, Lee's army crossed farms owned by free black people. Lee seized them and put them into slavery. Lee was brutal to enslaved people on his property. Whipping them until skin shredded and then had brine poured over their backs. This is your great man.

Was raised Southern Baptist. Utterly loathe them. They stand for absolutely nothing good in the world.

I think this is my absolute favorite out of all the photos you've posted. I know this is a few years old. If there's any way you can get a current photo of Bodie, I hope you'll post it. Hope he still remembers his pride pose.

The Republicans are pure nihilism. Standing for absolutely nothing and believing only in death & suffering.

I've been wondering about a related scenario. For many families, they restructure assets so their kids can inherit and Medicaid pays for the nursing home. What happens when that's no longer an option? Seems like that would be a serious, long-term wealth drain on future generations.

I'm thinking this would be stunning if painted on velvet. Or on the side of a van. But would be intimidating as a full back. No one would ever mess with you.

The sheer nihilism of the GOP is something I'll never understand. Actively working to increase sickness and death with no real payoff for themselves.

Only in the tiny Politico cinematic universe is anyone worried about "complicity" regarding Biden's age. No one else cares. No one. I thought you would have been above something this petty. Especially now.

Eventually, mom had to tell them he had dementia and to please stop contacting him. Seemed like the onslaught of calls and letters from the party + related groups only increased.

My stepfather would give five figures of cash to Republicans every year. Around 20 years ago, they sent him a FedEx return envelope with a note saying his Republican status was in doubt unless he sent them money immediately. They've been pulling this scam for decades.

Small correction: the forces were Republic. Which makes the massacre scene even more disturbing. These were supposedly the good guys. Shows how the Republic was so rotten that it could become the Empire without much effort. That it wasn't all Palpatine's doing.

Kinda love the thought of a 'monster of real estate.' Would be nice if, like gods & saints, there was a monster for every aspect of life and culture. "Gamera is the monster of kindness", etc. Also would be nice if each monster could get a feast day.

Neither holy, nor American, nor an empire. Imagining the post apocalyptic nation comprised of a loose confederation of warlords. Based out of the ruins of Duluth. Nobody respects them but they somehow manage to hold it together for a century or two.

CATPOPE!!CATPOPE!!MEOWMEOW!!CATPOPE!! In that alternate universe dive, you would have been my favorite band. At least for one drunken night.

Will help them greatly in the future. Not only if she has kids of her own, but also will let her feel a deep smugness when she sees someone abbreviate Arkansas to AK.

And we also hit the population numbers! Or at least I think we did. Long time since the movie / book for me. But I'm still haunted by their discovery that the oceans were dead. If we're in any 70's dystopia, I think we're in the Rollerball universe. Only much less fun.
comment in response to post
Computers with real AI that are the size of buildings. Rollerball is the national sport. Everything is doomed but we party the night away by setting trees on fire. When it's time to go, they show me films with now-extinct flamingos as they administer the poison.

Samuel & God were right. Kings are a bad idea. Looking at how things are unraveling very quickly, I've been thinking quite a bit about Rehoboam's botched coronation. 1 Kings 12.

I think they'll still be afraid of him because of a constant threat of violence. I also think regularly about Madison Cawthorn. People like Lindsey Graham will be loyal until the end because they fear being Cawthorn-ed.

That's a good interpretation. In World of Warcraft, mages have the spell "Alter Time". When cast, it does nothing for 10 seconds. Then it puts the mage's health & position to where it was when it was cast. Very powerful when used at the right time. Makes you look 10 seconds younger

Living near Lawrence, I had to try the search. Got the water temp for Clinton Lake. Close enough.

Instead, their political leaders encourage greater pollution. Ignore the climate. Want to end the science which preserves life. And all of this on top of doing everything they can to make parents' lives more difficult. How the hell you can take Liz seriously is beyond me.

"the notion that humanity should persist on this earth" I can't get past this line. If the natalists took this line seriously, they would be backing vaccination efforts. They would be rabid about stopping climate change. They'd be focused on all sorts of threats. But they aren't.

I somehow never thought of Grand Fenwick existing in the same universe as Latveria. Feels like a revelation. Considering Grand Fenwick managed to seize the Q-Bomb and land a man on the moon before the US, I suspect they could handle Doom on their own.

it would almost work. The parts about sexual freedom & insistence on consent would have to be dropped. I’m just waiting on someone to repackage Juche in American evangelical language. Think it would be a hit as that’s already what they’re thinking.

Agreed. Even before the election, some of them were making 'jokes' about sending students to the harvest after the mass deportations. I suspect this will be a real thing after they run out of inmates for the work.

Wrecked economy. Endless wars. One of the wars based solely on lies. Failure in the wake of Katrina. Attempted privatization of Social Security. Torture and unprecedented domestic surveillance. Unending scandals. And they still got 46%.

Trump is just envious of how Madagascar has avoided the humanity-destroying plague in every possible timeline.

Find it interesting that there's a small uptick among Democrats on the "enemy" questions. It's not much of one but still a little surprised there's one at all.

I remember the comic. Never read it but it was ever present in the christian bookstores. To kid me, it seemed off putting. A comicbook about a boring guy with no aliens, monsters, or men in tights? Just pointless to a 9 year old.

I'm old enough to remember my childhood church lionizing Colson for his post-Watergate conversion. And the books + merchandise that went with it. Was a lucrative grift for him for a while.

Thrilled to see an Ivan Albright reference. And yes, he would have made the most accurate Trump portrait.

I was just thinking that. That if I was one of the students, I'd be deeply paranoid of any border crossing or airport. That I wouldn't be allowed to leave. Probably would start thinking about how to illegally cross into Canada. Knowing I'd get arrested but at least they'd let me leave.
comment in response to post
Agreed. You'd think that. Also you'd think they'd try to live up to being the stoic stern badass they pretend to be. But no. They always sink into endless whining. I suppose it's because the only sympathy they have is for themselves.

Back in the 90s, I had a friend who predicted "one day, you'll see an American Shining Path operating somewhere in the Rockies." Thought he was crazy then. Still think he's crazy but now think he might be correct.

That's a really great idea. And would have thrilled the old me who bought countless tapes. Used to be quite happy when the j-card had zillions of folds & had all the lyrics. Just felt right. Kinda miss that.

One night last May, I slept better than I had in ages. Woke up to discover one of my legs was missing. Was a bit of a surprise. Couldn't walk for a couple of months. Middle age is annoying but at least it's not entirely boring.

I'm glad you mentioned their current status. I used to love Ic3peak. Still do. But didn't know how they felt about the war and stopped listening to them. I'm so glad they took a stand. Hope they're doing well outside of Russia.

This is worth trying even if you hate the Democrats. It's an easy way to find people in your area who are left-of-center or further left. You'll meet a lot of great people this way. And it's a good start for further organizing.

Speaking from experience, one of the best ways to get started is to connect with your county's Democratic Party. Odds are good your county will have one and it will be meeting at least semi-regularly. Even if your county is small & very rural, there will be one.

Being offended shouldn't be the GenX way. Mutter "whatever" in a monotone, walk away without a backwards look, and then cry yourself to sleep while listening to Swervedriver. That's the fine GenX tradition I keep.

That's so beautiful. This was my favorite toy as a kid. Released in the US as "Shogun Warriors" a long, long time ago. I think this was my first exposure to Japanese pop culture. Used to stare at his belt and wonder what it said.

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the people in the "woman / man on the street" photos. Onion's been using them for 25+ years now.

Lincoln Chaffee was the last liberal Republican on the national stage. Bush and the wars seemed to kill off what few were still around. Chaffee was the last one standing. Even though I was around for the last few liberal Republicans, I agree it is hard to imagine now. Even seemed weird at the time.

You're very correct. Whoever is pulling the strings is someone who believes very strongly in climate change. It's also no coincidence that every expansion target is something which would benefit Russia if it was held by a friend or a neutral.
