Oh look, what do we have here - funny little egg sacs again under stones on the cliffs, this time in Dorset. Yep, Micaria albovittata again! @britishspiders.bsky.social

A rather special 'rhubarb-and-custard' Thomisus onustus spider I found a couple of weeks ago. I haven't adjusted the colours - she really was that bright (see the last pic taken on my phone) @britishspiders.bsky.social #Thomisusonustus #om1 #omsystem #macrophotography #ukwildlife #dorsetwildlife

🐙🌿🕷️ Ever see a spider yawn? Well, now you have. Okay, not yawn as in draw a big sleepy breath - spiders don't breathe with their face - but this one is stretching its chelicerae (mouthparts that end in the fangs) wide, making them look like a Yosemite Sam mustache. Also, it's grooming its eyes--

When I saw these little flat topped, saucer like egg sacs on the south Devon cliffs, I knew exactly what the culprit was. Took me a while to find the beasty though! The rather rare Micaria albovittata- a new site and hectad for it. @britishspiders.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk @graemelyons.bsky.social

Found under a stone on extremely chalky Downland. Wondering if there is enough here for an ID of Drassyllus praeficus? @britishspiders.bsky.social @chalkspring.bsky.social @tylanberry.bsky.social

Train, taxi, over-long walk ending with sodden boots and socks after rain showers and wet vegetation. Tired, footsore but joyous. One happy Pseudoscorpion Recorder. Dendrochernes cyrneus. Norfolk Brecks.

Walking back to the car after a party in the middle of DinasP and spotted this ant mimic on the path, Zodarian fuscum. First UK record in 1997 and only known from a handful of sites @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk @wildnaturedinas.bsky.social and thanks @tylanberry.bsky.social

A recent Trip out with @graemelyons.bsky.social on a survey he picked up this male Walckenaeria furcillata, and handed it to me to photograph its the first time ive seen this species and what a crazy looking Walc 😁. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Cofnod #RecordOfTheWeek is this Pardosa palustris Wolf Spider spotted at the recent Pensychnant Recorders' Day. Recorded & 📸 by RichardG. srs.britishspiders.org.uk/portal.php/p... @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk @wwbic1.bsky.social @bispowys.bsky.social

A very well matched and green cucumber spider, Araniella, tucked away by it's web @britishspiders.bsky.social @sewbrec.org.uk

The problem of clothes shrinking as you get older solved - by arthropods, hundreds of millions of years ago!

A new species for the greenhouse (and wider patch), Zilla diodia hanging out at the hub of in her fine orbweb and continuing the species' rapid expansion in East Anglia @norfolknats.bsky.social @britishspiders.bsky.social

Are we able to ID this Xysticus spider to species? Could it be X. audax since it was seen at #RSPBArne? #Dorset 28/05/25 @britishspiders.bsky.social #Arachnid

Misumena vatia spider with dinner, seen 26/05/25 at #RingsteadBay, #Dorset @britishspiders.bsky.social #Arachnid

All done with the first round of ID for my dissertation, which makes 1,537 spiders in total with most to species where possible😩 notable finds include the one Mermessus trilobatus and 7 Panamomops sulcifrons. It's time to go through the second survey samples!🕷 @britishspiders.bsky.social

Yesterday's star find - a beautiful, pastel coloured, Thomisus onustus (Heather Crab Spider). She was sitting amongst the heather with her prey as the sun removed the last of the morning dew. #teammoth #dorsetwildlife @britishspiders.bsky.social #OMsystem #ukwildlife @dorsetwildlife.bsky.social

A Wolf Spider sp, resting on a Bog Bean leaf in the garden pond. @britishspiders.bsky.social @lincswildlife.bsky.social

Lots of information on the weird and wonderful habits of pseudoscorpions in our factsheet 8 at britishspiders.org.uk/factsheets

A really nice set of photos of Siler semiglaucus taken by Michał Górski in Sri Lanka & submitted to @inaturalist.bsky.social . This pretty & v active little jumping spider eats ants! (It’s not certain if all ‘Siler semiglaucus’ records refer to one species, btw.) www.inaturalist.org/observations...

One of the Wolf Spider species? @britishspiders.bsky.social #30DaysWild

Amazing views of this lovely Zebra Spider today with moth prey. @britishspiders.bsky.social

@britishspiders.bsky.social little crab spider hanging out on a leaf!

Dipogon spider-hunting wasp dragging a spider up the wall to its nest hole. This was in a concrete section of my garden bee/wasp hotel. #WaspLove #macro #photography

I wonder if any #spider folk here can confirm my suspicion that this is a recluse of some sort. If so, it's presumably Mediterranean Recluse as it was in Cyprus (on my neck, until I brushed it off - no harm to me or it). @britishspiders.bsky.social @cataranea.bsky.social

Now 4 years in a row that I've had one of these non-native "fleecy" jumping spiders, Pseudeuophrys lanigera, in my garden! Lifespan supposedly 1-3 years so maybe not the same one? When it disappeared from sight, I realised it might be hiding in this cable clip! @britishspiders.bsky.social

That makes 3 Panamomops sulcifrons females found on this site! 🥳🕷 @britishspiders.bsky.social

Segestria florentina by the back door. I can't recall getting two in one photo before. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Reasons not to mow (11): Mangora acalypha on unmown lawn today in Bengeo garden, woodland spider with very distinctive "cricket bat" pattern on its abdomen. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Garden wildlife. I've now got 4 Segestria florentinas, 3 on the house and one on the fence. The largest is the usual long staying one behind the front lamp, and the one on the fence was a new find last night, though I have previously seen one in this area. @britishspiders.bsky.social

Oh look at this beauty! So sorry I disturbed you when dismantling the front door surround… I’m hoping Noble False Widow, Steatoda nobilis…

Also nice to see a few other species in my garden recently that I don't often see elsewhere in Cornwall - Clubiona pallidula, Ero aphana and Parasteatoda simulans. Amazing the power that an unkempt garden can have for inverts! @britishspiders.bsky.social

Really great to see Entelecara acuminata in the garden again, I've not seen it for a while. It's quite incredible that I've never picked it up anywhere in the southwest outside of my garden. A true broadleaf garden shrub species! @britishspiders.bsky.social @graemelyons.bsky.social @cofnod.org.uk

Look who I found while out exploring today! There were three, yellow, female Misumena vatia in this area. Only this one had the added red stripes on the side of her abdomen 💛❤️💚. #spiders #arachnids #ukwildlife #dorsetwildlife #macrophotography #OMSystem

Wolf spider with her spiderlings ❤️ @britishspiders.bsky.social

Hi everyone, I am launching a community science scheme "Spider Spies" where we are asking you, to send us pictures and if you're keen and able samples of Misumena vatia, the Flower Crab Spider to investigate their interactions with their host flowers and the invertebrate community around them.

Bookings are going well so don’t miss out on the BENHS Harvestman workshop with Meg Skinner and her new test British key to ID them . . . To book: mail [email protected] providing a mobile contact number.
