A pond of Ecstasy. Though that doesn’t sound very doomy, to be fair.

What a great history lesson! Thank you!

I’m happy with just the cover too; I rarely watch the video. I appreciate what you do, as it stirs memories and causes me either to re-listen to something I’ve not heard for a long time or to listen to something new.

I recommend listening to The Legendary Wolfgang Press…, which collates three EPs that came before Standing Up Straight, and Bird Wood Cage that came after it. Queer is also good, but is a lot funkier and lighter than the others.

Great! They were one of my favourite bands in the 80s.

It’s a great album; I hope you’re enjoying it!

You’re all assuming that the principal subject was the woman. Perhaps the hen refused to lose its support human…?

Haha!

Congratulations! Also, I’ve enjoyed the hookup with the Naked Week. Which is?

Her pronunciation of ā€˜twat’ as ā€˜twotā€˜ is a particular favourite!

I’m listening to it now. It’s hilarious, like eavesdropping at a pub table where two people are chatting. A great episode. And I didn’t know Mike Joyce applied to be the drummer in the early days. (Well, that’s not the only thing I didn’t know, to be fair…)

He’s a wrong’un alright. I heard he trod on a lawn that had a ā€˜Keep off the Grass’ sign.

Finally. Someone fulfilling the niche demand for lit-up bike racks.

May I remind the Right Honourable Gentleman that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

A brutal, blistering track. Live it’s a wee bit quicker than the album version. A great choice!

They were, though do you remember all of the name changes? Spizz Oil, Atletico Spizz 80…? (I’m sure there were others.)

There’s a great programme on BBC Sounds by Miranda Sawyer that you might find interesting. It covers the first five albums. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b...

Likewise! I saw them at Lewisham Odeon that tour, with Smith playing for the Banshees. Spizz Energi (of ā€œWhere’s Captain Kirkā€ fame) was second support.

Brilliant.

ā€œStarmer Chameleonā€ and accompanying image. Very good; one of your best podcast covers!

This is utterly dispiriting. Also, approximately 2 women a week are killed by their partner. But then there is a third, unquantified, group of potential homicides, chalked up as accidental deaths despite strong circumstantial evidence. See this podcast series: tortoisemedia.com/hiddenhomici....

That is undeniably cute.

Nice! ā€˜Empty Eyes’ is a great track. I saw Marc do a solo set (maybe with ā€˜the Mambas’) in support of Siouxsie and the Banshees. The first song was only him on stage and he was utterly mesmerizing as he threw himself around the stage. I can’t remember what song it was, sadly.

I watched a British TV series about a police bomb team on, I think, HBO Max and the first bomb they had to deal with was in a flat where they entered the front door then went downstairs. I was so sure that couldn’t be right that I had to rewind to double-check. Thanks for this enlightening post!

I hope it works for you; good luck!

Specific songs usually do it for me but something that occasionally helps is an emotionally intense video. For example, the videos that pop up every now and again of a deaf child hearing with an implant for the first time, or a dog reunited with its owner after a few years apart.

It was Gwyneth Paltrow’s head!

What a great video. I’ve not seen it before; thanks for posting. I knew Smith played with the Banshees for lengthy periods but I hadn’t realized that Severin had played with The Cure at all (though I assume this may have been a one-off?).

I hadn’t seen the dogs! The duck must be thinking ā€œThere’s something not right hereā€¦ā€

I know! No socks when it’s clearly a really cold day. Oh, you mean the duck?

Well, I’m somewhat persuaded by the reference to the parable of the prodigal son. But if they want some of the fatted calf when I begrudgingly welcome them back, they can fuck right off.

I’ve only just seen this post, after replying to your Car Trouble one. So it was the first album, not a track. I really misremembered that! A great album, too.

I was wrong! I’ll look online to see where Dirk… appears.

Excellent and apt.

A classic! Is this the single with Dirk Wears White Sox as the B-side? For a long time I thought Dirk was such a great name.

You and me both, Graham!

Did you know that the song was released in 1981? A *long* time ago! (I checked online after I finished listening to Smashing Security.)

Egg-cellent David.

Seriously? I’m not sure what’s worse: the performative baiting or the triggered responses. The taco stunt is pretty feeble; though I’d watch a series of food-based taunts. You want to complain about teachers getting sacked? Watch me eat this apple.
