Well now, that quote immediately brought to mind Ms. LeGuin's novel _Malafrena_. I first read it when I was 19 (good age for that book), and read it again a couple of years ago ... I was moved both times, but it definitely hit a bit different for middle-aged me.

OK, well, I give them points for honesty. The "Department of Defense" has long been much more offensive than defensive, regardless of which party is in charge.

I have never hated anyone as much as I hate Stephen Miller. Not even Trump.

It's like RFK, Jr. being publicly anti-vax while having his own kids vaccinated.

And what did he expect when he voted for presidential immunity? How could he possibly be that naive?

Approved! I first read LoTR at a time when there were no pictures of the characters; this is pretty close to how I imagined Aragorn.

Not saying that people should accept this offer, but is there even a free flight?? Or is he lying like he always does?

His head reminds me of an egg. And I do what most people do with eggs.

Apparently the Trump gang doesn't understand the meaning of "sovereign nation."

Interesting question why Trump failed to mention Thomas. The author speculates that it's because of Thomas's blatant corruption, but I doubt Trump cares about that. My guess is that it's because Thomas is Black.

Militarized policing = state terrorism.

LOL. Also, I think it is well known that the IPCC reports are very cautious because they don't want to scare ppl or something.

Yeah, I thought so too. Sadly, unlike Theoden, I don't think getting rid of Stephen Wormtongue would let Trump return to his noble self (cuz that ain't a thing) - but it would be an improvement for sure.

Thoughts on watching this clip without sound: if somebody created a satirical movie about a governor, he would look just like Gavin Newsom.

Well, IDK. A friend of mine who is a trans woman went to Canada a couple of years ago to escape from a life-threatening situation. To the best of my knowledge she's been working and obeying the law the whole time, but last week her asylum application was denied without explanation.

This is good news, I guess - but it's a little weird that only 54% say he's exceeding the rightful scope of his powers, when he is so clearly going where no president has gone before; and that he's only -8% on "managing the federal government," when he's deliberately wrecking everything.

LOL, yeah. I made this 3 or 4 years ago:

He said he wasn't a left*ist*. Leftists are serious about leftist politics. *Lefty* is just a cute way liberals refer to themselves because left politics are trendy.

Oh, is that a millennial thing? I'm Gen X (well, technically a very late Boomer, but always identified with Gen X), and I do that. Or at least always think about doing it.

Message to this farmer and all those who think like him: Trump doesn't give a sh** about your well-being. He really doesn't care what happens to you. He is also insanely resistant to ever changing course, because that would mean admitting he was wrong, which would make him a LOSER.

And if you think it's OK because he was latinx, well ... 1) you're being a racist POS. Don't be that way. 2) when they run out of black and brown people, they'll come after wypipo who in some way don't fit. So unless you are prepared to kiss Bonalb Trunt's smelly ass 24/7, you're not safe either.

If your only plan is to wait for the imaginary super majority, you're planning to lose. The Dems need to learn a few strategy lessons from the Far Right. When they started pushing to destroy liberalism in the 70s, nobody took them seriously. But they fought, and fought, and fought, until they won.

DO IT!!

Yeah, no, I don't think that's how Trump's diseased brain works. I think he would call it fake news and sue the reporters for defamation - or maybe even send ICE to kidnap them.

Marriage also doesn't make you a citizen if you're here legally; it does make you eligible for a green card. I was married to an immigrant, so I'm very familiar with that process.

Apparently your Labour Party is about as good as our Democrats.

It's funny ... I was just now on Facebook, then came over here ... literally the last thing I saw on FB was somebody commenting "time to pack up and leave." <sigh>

Last time I checked, the global population was still rising.

I guess that's great if you have a fat investment portfolio and you can hunker down and wait for change. Meanwhile, how many people will lose their homes? How many will literally starve.

"Plans?" What are "plans?" I'm struggling just to cope with the insane cost of living in my city.

Probably not, because he only hires people who tell him what he wants to hear.

Or maybe they are *deliberately* destroying the economy. If you're a fascist and you want total power, that's one of the ways you get it. Destroy everything, blame someone else, persuade the masses that you're the only one who can lead them out of their misery.

Riots would be an excuse to declare martial law and start openly massacring protestors.

Or maybe ... they just don't want the system to work.

OK, but the message needs to be more explicit, I think: vote no on cloture - because that requires 60 votes; so that is the point where Dems actually have the power to stop the CR. I think Schumer indicated he would vote no on the CR itself, but vote yes on cloture. IOW, an objection with no teeth.

This is a tangent, I guess, but am I the only one who noticed the fundraising ads from Jeffries where he called himself "Leader Hakeem?" Like, who TF calls themself "Leader" like that? So weird.

Will it, though? Other than historians specializing in German history, does anyone remember the names of the Weimar officials who could have stopped Hitler but didn't?
