Modern engines do this fairly automatically. I admit this is not a everyday usage. It is just perhaps the most common legitimate usage for the word.

If someone is talking about auto repairs, you might give them the benefit of the doubt. It is used to indicate delay of the spark in an engine. Admittedly, that is a very specific context.
