The Russians risked war to stop a genocide that the US was supporting during the 1972 Indo Pak war. Indians will never forget that. 3 million people were killed in east Pakistan, the killing only stopped when the Russians sent their fleet to counter the one the US sent to the Bat of Bengal.

Just like the last civil war foreign powers will take sides even if they remain ‘officially neutral’. The most likely scenario is Russia and China supporting one side until they got the upper hand and then switching sides so it will be as long and bloody as possible.
