It's gonna be hilarious when the new batch of kids staring in this are old enough to form their own opinions and stances from their own experiences instead of just inheriting the ones from the adults in their lives and completely disavow the project and the author.

Which would have been loosely around the time the Greeks were stealing and then publishing off all their understanding of mathematics, astronomy, and other sciences from the Egyptians, the Arabs, the Persians.

(if that's worded in a way that's uncool lemme know and I'll either fix it or scrap it)

Because I am a big math nerd, I personally like to point to the Hopewell People's Earthworks. It's a massive complex in what is now called Ohio that demonstrates flawless and exact understandings of Geometry and Astronomy by the folks who lived on this land about 2000ish years ago.

It's funny in a really pathetic way to think that one of the easiest "we'll go back in time and save the world" scenarios could be just torrenting so much on roko's wifi that they can't get on the Something Awful forums. Christ.

I know that if you were to ask somebody they'd get real excited and say "well everything!" And what they actually mean is "everything that can make me money" because they're all so creatively and emotionally stunted that making money is the only thing that exists.

The other thing about "exceeding the power of the human brain" is like "okay but in what capacity?" Like Deep Blue beat Kasparov almost 30 years ago now so computers are already beating human brains in the field of chess yeah? Hell a dollar store calculator can do math faster than anybody alive.

That said, given Bungie's past history with difficulty and reward, I would absolutely SHOCKED if you had to do GMs to get tier 5 gear.
comment in response to post
Hopefully the tier system is a way to kind of alleviate this so harder activities give higher tiers of gear. But at the same time, if your power level continues to be farmable from anywhere always (previous XP, now unstable cores) it doesn't solve the problem of progression feeling directionless.
comment in response to post
For me, it's an issue of the idea that grinding power level and gear have no correlation to each other which results in no sense of progression. The idea of gearing up for a new season is fine and can even be fun... If you feel yourself getting stronger. That's Destiny's biggest fumble IMO.

I was like "oh they gotta do a bunch of huge engine level reworks for fraud I wonder what the plan is" 30 seconds into the trailer "OH OKAY YEAH"
comment in response to post
It was not. It was made by 80~90 people, 35ish in the direct employ of Sandfall and 55ish brought in on contracts. It ABSOLUTELY shows it was made by fewer people. Ex33 has dramatically less polish than you'd expect from a AAA game. The polish is what those extra 100 people are there for.

"Inspired by our burning desire for Titanfall 3, Here is an Apex Legends competitor!" Buddy shut up.

Putting aside the guy's hat (which we really shouldn't do because it's emblematic of the rest of him) Shouting to the crowd "Give us Titanfall 3 cowards!" And then dropping your own Battle Royale successor to a competitive, match based, multiplayer shooter is hilariously tone deaf.

Every great horror game needs at least a little bit of wacky bullshit to break the player out of being like accustomed to being scared.

Yeah like that

Yeah I'm not tuning in for the VGAs this year.

Yeah I think I'm not watching the VGAs this year.

tease of the fucking century holy shit
comment in response to post
For that joke to work they need to actually show the trailer after the thing they interrupted it for.

It's also super weird that there's a proper Pulse Rifle behind it.

This guys behind losers aside: "Hitman with more guns" is the most perfect formula for a James Bond game I can imagine and I'm fuckin STOKED.
comment in response to post
They spend their time complaining about how in AAA(A) land masculinity has been entirely defined by fatherhood, and then when the most macho game in like a fucking decade comes out it's "woke" Christ on a cross. Ranting aside, Hitman with 2x the guns is the most perfect Bond formula I can imagine.
comment in response to post
Also like putting aside the fact that they're calling "Tom Cruise in rushed de-aging make up" woke, He's doing *all* the hyper-macho Bond shit in that trailer. He's punching badguys, he's shooting guns, he's wearing bespoke suits, he's flirting with beautiful women, he's disobeying his superiors.
comment in response to post
What do you mean Woke. He's a straight (assumed anyways) white guy who shoots guns, wears expensive clothes, and woos ladies. What the fuck could you POSSIBLY mean woke?!?

Well, I guess we know Capcom and Marvel still aren't on speaking terms from MvCI

Matsuno really said "I am angry enough at the world to re-release tactics"
comment in response to post
The idea being like "hey win or lose you still practised how to handle that specific situation and that's the important part"
comment in response to post
I've always wondered if there's a way to make a game that loads into you a match like "hey don't worry about too much about the match itself and just try and focus on these couple things" based on your history + the match up + maybe the rank Maybe gameify it with like 1/10th of a hat or something.

Again just a shot in the dark here: It feels to me like a religion that's spent a collective millennia trying to get Jesus to talk to them would be the most willing or ready to accept that when a computer says "Hi I'm Jesus and I'm talking to you through the computer".

I would hazard a guess that the whole "God works in mysterious ways" thing where the followers are encouraged to interpret the divine meaning behind everything plays a part.

Ethical and environmental concerns aren't mutually exclusive. You can be angry about many things at the same time. I know I am. The original article is trying to downplay the environmental concerns. That is why we are talking about them right now.

about yea. Looking at the demand they project the AI industry looks to be around 0.1% of the beef industry when you look at both of them overall. But the point is not that AI is comparable to the beef industry. That point that I'm getting at is that it's real goddamn disingenuous to compare them.

Right, but according to the paper that just water that's used to pull heat out of the data centres. When you look at the water consumption more holistically, which the paper does, the data centre shoots up to 5.4m liters to train a model.

my numbers must be out of date then, can you point me towards something more recent?

This is them saying "Be proud of me for not finishing the entire case of beers before I get behind the wheel!"
comment in response to post
Also like, anybody who's familiar with the connects between the cattle industry and the environment knows that "we use less water than beef" Is not something to be proud of in that the cattle industry uses a disastrous amount of water. The bar is in a fucking mine shaft here.

So if the demo is full of "real" stuff they can show it off as a way to show the audience how vanishingly small the delta between game fidelity and reality is becoming. Meanwhile neither of us know what a real Leshen looks like up close so there isn't a frame of reference for the tech.
comment in response to post
Call me a naive optimist if you want (you wouldn't be wrong) but: I'm hoping that the demo's nature as a tech demo kinda lends itself to a more stylistically neutral showcase. Like you and I know what a real tree looks like, and maybe one of us knows what a real horse looks like right? ->
comment in response to post
The idea of looking at games that "tried to say stuff" with hindsight is extra funny when you bring up Last of Us because the director keeps finding new and innovative ways to be more wrong.

And then 2. When you're getting mobbed by civilians whose lives you've ruined near the end of the game you can shoot into the air and the crowd runs away in fear. And then your last squad mate looks at you with disgust like "Are you fucking serious? After everything?"
comment in response to post
But regardless: For me personally that little moment worked a hundred times better as "hey you fucked up and now you've gotta hold that fuck up" than the entire Gate sequence. Mostly because it still feels like it could have been avoided, while the Gate is INSTANTLY cheaped on a reload.
comment in response to post
There's two moments in spec ops that sit with me: 1. In one of the first big shootouts there's a civilian NPC scripted to run in front of your aim. When I reloaded the save to not make the mistake they were already dead. Now to be fair that could have been a bug.
comment in response to post
Fair enough. Personally speaking I will put more weight on a game's highs than its lows. (Shoutouts to FF16 for being only peaks and valleys) So like the sequence in 2018 after you kill magni locks the game at a minimum of "good" or me. But yeah I can see the shit editing being a deal breaker.
comment in response to post
I think mid is a little far. Like don't get me wrong here they still aren't like medium defining or anything, but I think the high points are still pretty high. Ragnarok needed an editing pass done with a broadsword, but Kratos, Mimir, Brock, and Animal-Locked-Freya are an excellent RPG party.

That said, Vampire Survivor has a bit of a roadblock where it's not really targeting the gambling audience as much as it is the gaming audience. So while i think it would be a more effective trap, it's gonna be harder to lure people in in the first place.
