Lake Bonneville itself was fresh water, only becoming salty as it evaporated and became landlocked. The Great Salt Lake is the modern remnant of Bonneville.

Was just at that same spot back in March for a project I'm working on. Concerning the impact/salt dome debate; years ago, my wife found shatter cones and "odd" breccia in the area of upheaval dome, pointing towards an impact formation.
